Abstract

A method of making an AC induction motor includes: providing a rotor and a stator for the AC induction motor; determining, for different geometries of an end ring of the rotor, a location of a first centroid of current density in the end ring; determining, for end turns of the stator, a location of a second centroid of current density in the end turns; selecting a geometry for at least the endring of the rotor so that an axial distance between the first centroid of current density and the second centroid of current density is minimized; and assembling the AC induction motor, wherein the end turns and the end ring have the selected geometries.

Claims (18)

1. An AC induction motor comprising:

a rotor;

a stator;

end turns formed by windings of the stator, wherein a first centroid of current density in the end turns is at a first axial distance from the stator; and

at least one end ring for the rotor, wherein the end ring has a geometry so that a second axial distance, between a second centroid of current density in the end ring and the rotor, is adapted to be the same as the first axial distance.

2. The AC induction motor of claim 1 , wherein the end ring has a polygonal cross-section profile.

3. The AC induction motor of claim 2 , wherein the polygonal cross-section profile is essentially rectangular.

4. The AC induction motor of claim 1 , wherein the end ring has a cross-section profile partially defined by first and second surfaces that are planar in a radial direction.

5. The AC induction motor of claim 4 , wherein the second surface is wider in the radial direction than the first surface.

6. The AC induction motor of claim 5 , wherein the second surface is adjacent the rotor and the first surface is opposite the second surface from the rotor.

7. The AC induction motor of claim 5 , wherein the cross-section profile is also partially defined by a third surface that connects the first and second surfaces, the third surface extending in an axial direction and being perpendicular to the first and second surfaces.

8. The AC induction motor of claim 5 , wherein the cross-section profile is also partially defined by a third surface that connects the first and second surfaces, the third surface having a portion that is slanted relative to an axial direction.

9. The AC induction motor of claim 8 , wherein the cross-section profile is also partially defined by curved surfaces on either side of the third surface, each of the curved surfaces connecting the third surface to a respective one of the first and second surfaces.

10. The AC induction motor of claim 1 , wherein the AC induction motor comprises a motor shaft and the first axial distance and the second axial distance represents respective distances along an axial direction defined according to the motor shaft of the AC induction motor.

11. The AC induction motor of claim 1 , wherein the rotor comprises a core, and the core is a steel core.

12. The AC induction motor of claim 1 , wherein the at least one end ring comprises at least one copper end ring.

13. The AC induction motor of claim 1 , further comprising a ring-shaped spacer disposed between the at least one end ring and the rotor.

14. The AC induction motor of claim 1 , wherein the AC induction motor comprises an aluminum housing.
