Abstract

Systems and methods are described for exploiting inter-cell interference to achieve multiplexing gain in a multiple antenna system (MAS) with multi-user (MU) transmissions (“MU-MAS”). For example, a MU-MAS of one embodiment comprises a wireless cellular network with multiple distributed antennas operating cooperatively to eliminate inter-cell interference and increase network capacity exploiting inter-cell multiplexing gain.

Claims (20)

1. A multiple antenna system (MAS) with multiuser (MU) transmissions (“MU-MAS”) comprising:

a plurality of antennas or wireless transceiver devices (BTSs) distributed throughout a coverage area without cells and without an overlaying macrocell at the same frequency, all sharing the same cell identifier (cell ID);

a plurality of wireless user devices (UEs) communicatively coupled to the BTSs; and

a spatial processing unit that uses precoding to generate a plurality of waveforms for the BTSs interfering with one another to create a plurality of concurrent non-interfering downlink (DL) or uplink (UL) data links, including control channel links, between the BTSs and the UEs within the same frequency band.

2. A method implemented within a MU-MAS comprising:

distributing a plurality of BTSs throughout a coverage area without cells and without an overlaying macrocell at the same frequency, all sharing the same cell ID;

communicatively coupling a plurality of UEs to the BTSs; and

uses precoding to generate a plurality of waveforms for the BTSs interfering with one another to create a plurality of concurrent non-interfering DL or UL data links, including control channel links, between the BTSs and the UEs within the same frequency band.

3. The system as in claim 1 wherein the MU-MAS is a mobile network.

4. The system as in claim 3 wherein the mobile network is compatible with 3GPP protocols.

5. The system as in claim 1 wherein closed-loop or open-loop precoding methods are employed to create the concurrent non-interfering DL and UL data links.

6. The system as in claim 5 in which a DL or UL reference signal is used to estimate the channel state information (CSI) of each of a plurality of the UEs.

7. The system as in claim 6 in which UL/DL reciprocity is exploited to estimate the CSI.

8. The system as in claim 1 in which the UEs have mobility throughout the coverage area without hand-overs.

9. The method as in claim 2 wherein the MU-MAS is a mobile network.

10. The method as in claim 9 wherein the mobile network is compatible with 3GPP protocols.

11. The method as in claim 2 wherein the MU-MAS creates the concurrent non-interfering DL and UL data links using closed-loop or open-loop precoding.

12. The method as in claim 11 in wherein the MU-MAS uses a DL or UL reference signal to estimate the CSI of each of a plurality of the UEs.

13. The method as in claim 12 wherein the MU-MAS exploits UL/DL reciprocity to estimate the CSI.

14. The method as in claim 2 in which the UEs have mobility throughout the coverage area without hand-overs.
