Compositions and methods for treating pterygium recurrence
Compositions and methods for inducing pterygium regression from visual axis/central cornea, stabilizing pterygium, treating hyperemia and symptoms in pterygium patients, and treating pterygium recurrence following pterygiectomy are disclosed. The methods include administration of a multikinase inhibitor, an antimetabolite or a combination thereof to patients in need thereof.
1. A method for treating pterygium in an eye of a subject, comprising administering to the affected eye of the subject a therapeutically effective amount of nintedanib.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein treating pterygium comprises reducing hyperemia, regressing a pterygium, or stabilizing a pterygium.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein treating pterygium comprises reducing hyperemia.
4. The method of claim 2 , wherein treating pterygium comprises pterygium regression.
5. The method of claim 2 , wherein treating pterygium comprises pterygium stabilization.
6. The method of claim 2 , wherein treating pterygium further comprises reducing a symptom of pterygium.
7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the symptom of pterygium comprises ocular discomfort, irritation, blurred vision, foreign body sensation, or pain.
8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the symptom of pterygium is a clinical symptom or a subclinical symptom.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nintedanib is administered to the affected eye in the form of a topical ocular formulation or an ocular implant.
10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the topical ocular formulation is a solution or a suspension.
11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the topical ocular formulation further comprises one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients.
12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the ocular implant is injected into the affected eye.
13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the ocular implant further comprises one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients.
14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising administering to the affected eye of the subject a pharmaceutically effective amount of an antimetabolite.
15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the antimetabolite blocks epithelial and fibroblast cell proliferation.
16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the antimetabolite is selected from the group consisting of mitomycin C, 5-fluorouracil, and thiotepa.
17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration is performed prior to surgical removal of a pterygium.
18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration is performed during a surgical procedure to remove a pterygium.
19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration is performed following surgical removal of a pterygium.
