Abstract

In a coupled control mode, the surgeon directly controls movement of an associated slave manipulator with an input device while indirectly controlling movement of one or more non-associated slave manipulators, in response to commanded motion of the directly controlled slave manipulator, to achieve a secondary objective. By automatically performing secondary tasks through coupled control modes, the system's usability is enhanced by reducing the surgeon's need to switch to another direct mode to manually achieve the desired secondary objective. Thus, coupled control modes allow the surgeon to better focus on performing medical procedures and to pay less attention to managing the system.

Claims (82)

1. A medical system comprising:

a master manipulator;

a first slave manipulator coupleable to a first device;

a second slave manipulator coupleable to a second device;

a first slave controller operatively coupleable to the master manipulator and the first slave manipulator so that the first slave controller is configured to control the first slave manipulator for moving the first device to a first device commanded position indicated by an input from the master manipulator; and

a second slave controller operatively coupleable to the first slave controller and the second slave manipulator so that the second slave controller is configured to control the second slave manipulator for moving the second device, to perform a secondary objective, according to information of the first device commanded position received from the first slave controller.

2. The medical system according to claim 1 ,

wherein the master manipulator has a plurality of master joints; and

wherein the first slave controller is configured to determine the first device commanded position from information of master joint positions of the plurality of master joints.

3. The medical system according to claim 2 ,

wherein the first slave manipulator has a plurality of first slave joints coupled to a plurality of first links for moving the first device when the first device is coupled to the first slave manipulator; and

wherein the first slave controller is configured to:

receive the information of the master joint positions over time from a plurality of master joint position sensors coupled to the master joints,

transform the information of the master joint positions over time to the first device commanded position,

generate first slave joint commanded positions by using the first device commanded position, and

control movement of the plurality of first slave joints according to the first slave joint commanded positions.

4. The medical system according to claim 3 ,

wherein the second slave controller is coupled to the first slave controller via a data pick-off/receiving point.

5. The medical system according to claim 1 ,

wherein the first device comprises a first medical tool;

wherein the second device comprises a base;

wherein the base is coupleable to the first medical tool so that the first medical tool moves when the base moves; and

wherein the secondary objective is to move the base so that a range of motion of the first device is increased.

6. The medical system according to claim 5 ,

wherein the base comprises a guide tube; and

wherein the first medical tool is extendable through, and out of a distal end of, the guide tube.

7. The medical system according to claim 1 ,

wherein the first device comprises an imaging system;

wherein the second device comprises a second medical tool; and

wherein the secondary objective is to move the second medical tool so that a working end of the second medical tool is within a field of view of the imaging system.

8. The medical system according to claim 1 ,

wherein the first device comprises a first medical tool;

wherein the second device comprises an imaging system; and

wherein the secondary objective is to move the imaging system so that a working end of the first medical tool is within a field of view of the imaging system.

9. The medical system according to claim 1 ,

wherein the first device comprises a guide tube;

wherein the second device comprises a second medical tool, the second medical tool being extendable through, and out of a distal end of, the guide tube;

wherein the first slave controller is configured to control the first slave manipulator for moving the guide tube in one or more directions as indicated by the input from the master manipulator, but not in a first direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of the guide tube; and

wherein the second slave controller is configured to control the second slave manipulator for moving the second medical tool in a second direction, the second direction being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the guide tube when the input from the master manipulator indicates moving the guide tube in the first direction.

10. The medical system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a third slave manipulator coupleable to a third device; and

a third slave controller operatively coupleable to the first slave controller and the third slave manipulator so that the third slave controller is configured to control the third slave manipulator for moving the third device, to perform the secondary objective in conjunction with the second slave controller, according to information of the first device commanded position received from the first slave controller.

11. A medical system comprising:

a master manipulator;

first manipulator means for moving a first device portion;

second manipulator means for moving a second device portion;

first controller means for controlling the first manipulator means to move the first device portion to a commanded position indicated by an input from the master manipulator; and

second controller means for controlling the second manipulator means to move the second device portion according to information of the commanded position received from the first controller means.

12. The medical system according to claim 11 ,

wherein the second controller means controls the second manipulator means to move the second device portion according to information of the commanded position received from the first controller means to perform a secondary objective.

13. The medical system according to claim 12 ,

wherein the first device portion comprises a part of a first medical tool;

wherein the second device portion comprises a part of a base;

wherein the base is coupled to the first manipulator means so that the first manipulator means moves when the base moves; and

wherein the secondary objective is to move the base so that a range of motion of the first medical tool is increased.

14. The medical system according to claim 12 ,

wherein the first device portion comprises a part of an imaging system;

wherein the second device portion comprises a part of a second medical tool; and

wherein the secondary objective is to move the second medical tool so that a working end of the second medical tool is within a field of view of the imaging system.

15. The medical system according to claim 12 ,

wherein the first device portion comprises a part of a first medical tool;

wherein the second device portion comprises a part of an imaging system; and

wherein the secondary objective is to move the imaging system so that a working end of the first medical tool is within a field of view of the imaging system.

16. The medical system according to claim 11 , further comprising:

third manipulator means for moving a third device portion; and

third controller means for controlling the third manipulator means to move the third device portion to perform a secondary objective in conjunction with the second controller means according to information of the commanded position received from the first controller means.
