Abstract

Various arrangements of increasing an amount of contact between an electrolyte and active materials of a battery cell are presented herein. A battery cell may be inserted within a housing such that the battery cell is submersed in liquid. The housing may be sealed, then pressure and heat may be applied to the liquid. The battery cell may then be removed from the housing and used as part of a sealed battery module.

Claims (20)

1. A method for increasing an amount of contact between an electrolyte and active materials of a battery cell, the method comprising:

inserting the battery cell within a first housing such that the battery cell is submersed in liquid, wherein the battery cell comprises an anode, a cathode, and the electrolyte;

sealing the first housing;

applying pressure to the liquid such that the liquid applies isotropic pressure to the battery cell within the sealed first housing;

applying heat to the liquid such that heat is transferred from the liquid to the battery cell within the first sealed housing;

ceasing to apply the pressure and the heat to the liquid;

unsealing the first housing following ceasing to apply the pressure and the heat to the liquid; and

removing the battery cell from the first housing.

2. The method for increasing the amount of contact between the electrolyte and the active materials of the battery cell of claim 1 , further comprising:

installing the battery cell that has been removed from the first housing into a second housing, wherein the second housing is filled with liquid.

3. The method for increasing the amount of contact between the electrolyte and the active materials of the battery cell of claim 2 , further comprising:

pressurizing the second housing such that the liquid within the second housing exerts a lower pressure on the battery cell than the isotropic pressure applied to the battery cell within the sealed first housing.

4. The method for increasing the amount of contact between the electrolyte and the active materials of the battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the battery cell is a jelly-roll style battery cell.

5. The method for increasing the amount of contact between the electrolyte and the active materials of the battery cell of claim 4 , wherein the battery cell is a solid-state battery cell.

6. The method for increasing the amount of contact between the electrolyte and the active materials of the battery cell of claim 5 , wherein the electrolyte of the battery cell is a Li-ion conductive polymer.

7. The method for increasing the amount of contact between the electrolyte and the active materials of the battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the liquid is a non-electrically conductive oil.

8. The method for increasing the amount of contact between the electrolyte and the active materials of the battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the battery cell is wrapped in a flexible membrane.

9. The method for increasing the amount of contact between the electrolyte and the active materials of the battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the isotropic pressure applied to the battery cell within the sealed first housing is at least 1 MPa.

10. The method for increasing the amount of contact between the electrolyte and the active materials of the battery cell of claim 1 , wherein the liquid is heated to at least a temperature of 100° C. within the sealed first housing.

11. The battery cell created by the method of claim 1 .
