Abstract

A cloud storage system provides remote access to a file associated with the cloud storage system. In response to a request to access the file, the cloud storage system identifies applications available to the request generator and capable of accessing the file, which may include both online web-based applications and applications installed on a device with which the user is accessing the file. The cloud storage system determines an application type of an identified application, and provides file access to the identified application based on the application type.

Claims (59)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, from a user device, a request to access file data stored on a cloud storage;

determining that at least one first application available to the user device is capable of accessing the requested file data without downloading content of the requested file data based on a first application type of the at least one first application;

in response to determining that the at least one first application is capable of accessing the requested file data without downloading content of the requested file data, providing access information of the requested file data to the at least one first application;

determining that at least one second application available to the user device is not capable of accessing the requested file data without downloading content of the requested file data based on a second application type of the at least one second application; and

in response to determining that the at least one second application is not capable of accessing the requested file data without downloading content of the requested file data, downloading content of the requested file data from the cloud storage.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the at least one first application is installed on the user device sending the request, wherein providing access information to the at least one first application is further based on the at least one first application being installed on the user device.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the at least one first application is a web-based application associated with the cloud storage, wherein providing access information to the at least one first application is further based on the at least one first application being associated with the cloud storage.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the at least one second application is a web-based application associated with the cloud storage, wherein downloading content of the requested file data is further based on the at least one second application being a web-based application not associated with the cloud storage.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein downloading content of the requested file data comprises downloading content of the requested file data to a server associated with a web-based application.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether the at least one first application is installed on the user device sending the request;

in response to determining that the at least one first application is installed on the user device, providing access to metadata associated with the requested file data; and

in response to determining that the at least one first application is not installed on the user device, denying access to metadata associated with the requested file data.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether the at least one first application is a web-based application associated with the cloud storage;

in response to determining that the at least one first application is associated with the cloud storage, providing access to metadata associated with the requested file data; and

in response to determining that the at least one first application is not associated with the cloud storage, denying access to metadata associated with the requested file data.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying that the request is received from a user;

identifying the user device from which the request is received among a plurality of devices associated with the user; and

determining that the user device has a predetermined default application for accessing the requested file data, wherein the access information of the requested file data is provided to the predetermined default application.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether the at least one first application is available to a user sending the request;

in response to determining that the at least one first application is not available, providing, to the user, an option to gain access to the at least one first application;

receiving, from the user, a selection of one of the at least one first application; and

providing access to the selected application if the selected application is one of the at least one first applications that is capable of accessing the requested file data without downloading content of the requested file data.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

querying the user device associated with the user for list of applications associated with the user, wherein determining whether the at least one first application is available to the user is based on the query.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein determining whether the at least one first application is available to the user is based on information in the cloud storage.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the cloud storage includes a third-party database.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a type of the requested file data; and

determining, based on the identified type of the requested file data, that the at least one first application is capable of accessing the requested file data.

14. A system, comprising:

one or more processors configured to:

receive, from a user device, a request to access file data stored on a cloud storage;

determine that at least one first application available to the user device is capable of accessing the requested file data without downloading content of the requested file data based on a first application type of the at least one first application;

in response to determining that the at least one first application is capable of accessing the requested file data without downloading content of the requested file data, provide access information of the requested file data to the at least one first application;

determine that at least one second application available to the user device is not capable of accessing the requested file data without downloading content of the requested file data based on a second application type of the at least one second application; and

in response to determining that the at least one second application available to the user device is not capable of accessing the requested file data without downloading content of the requested file data, download content of the requested file data from the cloud storage.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine whether the at least one first application is installed on the user device sending the request, wherein providing access information to the at least one first application is further based on the at least one first application being installed on the user device.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine whether the at least one first application is a web-based application associated with the cloud storage, wherein providing access information to the at least one first application is further based on the at least one first application being associated with the cloud storage.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine whether the at least one second application is a web-based application associated with the cloud storage, wherein downloading content of the requested file data is further based on the at least one second application being a web-based application not associated with the cloud storage.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine whether the at least one first application is installed on the user device sending the request;

in response to determining that the at least one first application is installed on the user device, provide access to metadata associated with the requested file data; and

in response to determining that the at least one first application is not installed on the user device, deny access to metadata associated with the requested file data.

19. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine whether the at least one first application is a web-based application associated with the cloud storage;

in response to determining that the at least one first application is associated with the cloud storage, provide access to metadata associated with the requested file data; and

in response to determining that the at least one first application is not associated with the cloud storage, deny access to metadata associated with the requested file data.

20. The system of claim 14 , wherein at least a portion of the cloud storage includes a third-party database.
