Abstract

Methods and devices for the repair of a ruptured ligament using a scaffold device are provided. Aspects of the invention, may include a scaffold attached by a suture to an anchor. In aspects of the invention, the anchor may be secured to a bone near or at the repair site.

Claims (28)

1. A method for treating a ligament or tendon exposed to synovial fluid, the method comprising:

drilling a hole in a first bone;

connecting a suture to the first bone using a first device;

connecting the suture to a first ruptured end of a ligament or tendon, the first ruptured end of the ligament or tendon connected to a second bone; and

positioning a scaffold along the suture between the first bone and the first ruptured end of the ligament or tendon.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising threading the scaffold onto the suture.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

drilling a hole in the second bone; and

connecting a second suture to the second bone using a second device.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first bone is a one of a femur or a tibia and the second bone is the other one of the femur or the tibia.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising attaching the first device only indirectly to the scaffold.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the scaffold comprises a porous collagen sponge.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising treating the scaffold with a repair material.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the repair material is a platelet or plasma.

9. A method for treating a ligament or tendon exposed to synovial fluid, the method comprising:

drilling a hole in a first bone;

connecting a suture to a first ruptured end of a ligament or tendon, the first ruptured end of the ligament or tendon connected to a second bone;

connecting the suture to the first bone using a first device; and

positioning a scaffold along the suture between the first bone and the first ruptured end of the ligament or tendon.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising threading the scaffold onto the suture.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

drilling a hole in the second bone; and

connecting a second suture to the second bone using a second device.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first bone is a one of a femur or a tibia and the second bone is the other one of the femur or the tibia.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising attaching the first device only indirectly to the scaffold.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the scaffold comprises a porous collagen sponge.

15. The method of claim 9 , further comprising treating the scaffold with a repair material.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the repair material is a platelet or plasma.
