Abstract

A lid, which may be sized and configured to be attached to a container, may include a first opening and a second opening. The first opening may be at least partially defined by a first wall outwardly extending from an upper surface of the lid and the second opening may be at least partially defined by a second wall outwardly extending from the upper surface of the lid. A common wall may separate and at least partially define the first opening and the second opening. If desired, the first opening may be disposed within the spout and the first opening may provide a first fluid pathway to a fluid disposed in a first portion of a container. The second opening may also be disposed within the spout and the second opening may provide a second fluid pathway to the fluid disposed in a second portion of the container.

Claims (43)

1 . A lid sized and configured to be attached to a container, the lid comprising:

a first opening in the lid, the first opening at least partially defined by a first wall outwardly extending from an upper surface of the lid;

a second opening in the lid, the second opening at least partially defined by a second wall outwardly extending from the upper surface of the lid; and

a common wall separating the first opening and the second opening, the common wall at least partially defining the first opening and the second opening.

2 . The lid as in claim 1 , wherein the first opening and the second opening are disposed within a spout, the spout at least partially defined by the first wall and the second wall.

3 . The lid as in claim 1 , further comprising a conduit in fluid communication with the second opening, the first opening sized and configured to provide a first fluid pathway to an upper portion of an attached container, the second opening and the conduit providing a second fluid pathway to a lower portion of the container.

4 . The lid as in claim 3 , wherein the first fluid pathway is sized and configured to allow fluid to be poured from the container; and

wherein the second fluid pathway is sized and configured to allow fluid to be sucked through the conduit and the second opening.

5 . The lid as in claim 1 , wherein the second opening circumscribes at least a portion of the first opening.

6 . The lid as in claim 1 , wherein a center portion of an upper portion of the first opening is spaced a first distance away from the lid;

wherein a center portion of an upper portion of the second opening is spaced a second distance away from the lid; and

wherein the second distance is larger than the first distance.

7 . The lid as in claim 1 , wherein the first opening has a substantially circular-shaped cross sectional configuration;

wherein the second opening has a substantially arc-shaped cross sectional configuration; and

wherein the common wall allows a portion of the first opening to be at least partially nested in the arc-shaped portion of the second opening.

8 . The lid as in claim 1 , wherein when the lid is connected to a container and the container is filled with a fluid, the fluid may be poured through the first opening when the container is inverted; and

wherein when a conduit is connected to the second opening, the fluid may be sucked through the conduit and the second opening when the container is in a generally upright configuration.

9 . The lid as in claim 1 , wherein the common wall and a front portion of the second opening are disposed at an angle between about 10° and about 20° relative to an axis disposed generally perpendicular to the first opening.

10 . The lid as in claim 1 , further comprising a lower lip receiving portion in the second wall, the lower lip receiving portion sized and configured to receive a lower lip of a person consuming a fluid flowing through the second opening of the lid; and

further comprising an upper lip receiving portion in an upper portion of the first wall, the upper lip receiving portion sized and configured to receive an upper lip of a user consuming a fluid flowing through the second opening of the lid.

11 . A lid sized and configured to be attached to a container, the container sized and configured to be filled with a fluid, the lid comprising:

a body;

a spout extending from an upper surface of the body;

a first opening disposed within the spout, the first opening providing a first fluid pathway to a fluid disposed in a first portion of a container; and

a second opening disposed within the spout, the second opening providing a second fluid pathway to the fluid disposed in a second portion of the container.

12 . The lid as in claim 11 , further comprising a conduit coupled to the second opening, the conduit extending from the second opening to the lower portion of the container, the conduit and the second opening providing the second fluid pathway.

13 . The lid as in claim 11 , further comprising a closure connected to the body, the closure movable between a closed position and an open position, the closure comprising:

an activator;

a cover; and

a connecting member that is connected to the activator and the cover;

wherein the activator is movable between a first position and a second position, the movement of the activator from the first position to the second position causes the cover to move from a closed position to an open position, the movement of the activator from the second position to the first position causes the cover to move from the open position to the closed position.

14 . The lid as in claim 13 , wherein the activator and the cover are pivotally attached to the body;

wherein the connecting member is pivotally attached to the activator and the cover; and

wherein the activator, the cover and the connecting member form an over center latching mechanism.

15 . The lid as in claim 13 , wherein the connecting member further comprises a biasing mechanism that allows a length of the connecting member to change as the activator moves between the first and the second positions.

16 . The lid as in claim 15 , wherein when a force applied to the activator is sufficient to overcome the biasing mechanism of the connecting member, the activator can be moved between the first and second positions.

17 . The lid as in claim 15 , wherein the biasing mechanism biases the cover in the closed position when the activator is in the first position.

18 . The lid as in claim 15 , wherein a force applied to the activator must overcome a biasing force of the biasing mechanism to allow the activator to be moved from the first position to the second position and the cover to be moved from the closed position to the open position.

19 . The lid as in claim 15 , wherein an amount of force applied to the activator must be sufficient to allow the activator to rotate past a center point of the over center latching mechanism to allow the activator to move from the first position to the second position and to dispose the cover in the open position; and

wherein an amount of force applied to the activator must be sufficient to allow the activator to rotate past the center point of the over center latching mechanism to allow the activator to move from the second position to the first position and the biasing mechanism of the connecting member applies to a force to the cover and the activator to secure the cover in the closed position.

20 . The lid as in claim 13 , wherein the cover seals the first opening and the second opening in the closed position; and

wherein the cover allows access to the first opening and the second opening in the open position.
