Abstract

A process and system are disclosed for downloading sensor data, stored in a memory device of a surgical cutting and fastening instrument, to an external or remote computer device. The process may involve storing data from one or more sensors of a surgical cutting and fastening instrument in a memory device of a control unit of the surgical cutting and fastening instrument during a surgical procedure involving the surgical cutting and fastening instrument. Next, after the surgical procedure, a data link between the control unit and the remote computer device is established. Then, the sensor data can be downloaded from the control unit to the remote computer device.

Claims (71)

1. A stapling system, comprising:

a housing;

a shaft extending from said housing;

an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw, and wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge including staples removably stored therein;

a firing system including a firing member movable through a staple firing stroke between a beginning position and an end position; and

a remote computer console including a viewing screen, wherein data regarding a completion progress of the staple firing stroke between said beginning position and said end position is output to said remote computer console,

wherein said stapling system further comprises a position sensor that outputs a signal indicative of the position of said firing member between the beginning position and the end position of the staple firing stroke.

2. The stapling system of claim 1 , further comprising a closing system including a closure member movable through a closure stroke to move said first jaw into a closed position, wherein data regarding the closure stroke is output to said remote computer console.

The stapling system of claim 2 , wherein the closure stroke and the firing stroke are actuatable independently, and wherein said closing system and said firing system are constructed in a manner to afford the clinician operating said stapling system an opportunity to re-open said first jaw before proceeding onto the staple firing stroke.

4. The stapling system of claim 3 , wherein said firing member comprises a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during the staple firing stroke.

5. The stapling system of claim 3 , further comprising:

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said shaft; and

an articulation drive for articulating said end effector, wherein data regarding the articulation of said end effector is output to said remote computer console.

6. The stapling system of claim 5 , further comprising a communications link between said housing and said remote computer console.

7. The stapling system of claim 6 , wherein said communications link comprises a parallel data communications link.

8. The stapling system of claim 5 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable, and wherein data regarding the presence of said staple cartridge in said end effector is output to said remote computer console.

9. The stapling system of claim 8 , wherein said staple cartridge comprises a sled movable from a proximal unfired position to a distal fired position during the staple firing stroke, and wherein data regarding the position of said sled is output to said remote computer console.

10. A stapling system, comprising:

a housing;

a shaft extending from said housing;

an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw, and wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge including staples removably stored therein;

a firing system including a firing member movable through a staple firing stroke between a beginning position and an end position; and

a remote computer console including a viewing screen, wherein data regarding a completion progress of the staple firing stroke between said beginning position and said end position is output to said remote computer console,

wherein said stapling system further comprises a series of digital sensors placed within said shaft, wherein said series of digital sensors provide data indicative of the position of said firing member between said beginning position and said end position of the staple firing stroke.

11. The stapling system of claim 10 , further comprising a closing system including a closure member movable through a closure stroke to move said first jaw into a closed position, wherein data regarding the closure stroke is output to said remote computer console.

The stapling system of claim 11 , wherein the closure stroke and the firing stroke are actuatable independently, and wherein said closing system and said firing system are constructed in a manner to afford the clinician operating said stapling system an opportunity to re-open said first jaw before proceeding onto the staple firing stroke.

13. The stapling system of claim 12 , wherein said firing member comprises a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during the staple firing stroke.

14. The stapling system of claim 12 , further comprising:

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said shaft; and

an articulation drive for articulating said end effector, wherein data regarding the articulation of said end effector is output to said remote computer console.

15. The stapling system of claim 14 , further comprising a communications link between said housing and said remote computer console.

16. The stapling system of claim 15 , wherein said communications link comprises a parallel data communications link.

17. The stapling system of claim 14 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable, and wherein data regarding the presence of said staple cartridge in said end effector is output to said remote computer console.

18. The stapling system of claim 17 , wherein said staple cartridge comprises a sled movable from a proximal unfired position to a distal fired position during the staple firing stroke, and wherein data regarding the position of said sled is output to said remote computer console.

19. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

a housing;

a shaft extending from said housing;

an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw;

a staple cartridge including staples removably stored therein;

a firing system including a firing member movable through a staple firing stroke between a first position and a second position;

a remote computer console including a viewing screen, wherein data regarding a completion progress of the staple firing stroke between said first position and said second position is output to said remote computer console; and

a sensor that outputs a signal indicative of the position of said firing member between said first position and said second position of the staple firing stroke.

20. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 19 , further comprising a closing system including a closure member movable through a closure stroke to move said first jaw into a closed position, wherein data regarding the closure stroke is output to said remote computer console.

The surgical stapling instrument of claim 20 , wherein the closure stroke and the firing stroke are actuatable independently, and wherein said closing system and said firing system are constructed in a manner to afford a clinician operating said surgical stapling instrument an opportunity to re-open said first jaw before proceeding onto the staple firing stroke.

22. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 19 , wherein said firing member comprises a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during the staple firing stroke.

23. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 19 , further comprising:

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said shaft; and

an articulation drive operable to articulate said end effector, wherein data regarding the articulation of said end effector is output to said remote computer console.

24. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 19 , wherein said staple cartridge is replaceable, and wherein data regarding the presence of said staple cartridge in said end effector is output to said remote computer console.

25. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:

a housing;

a shaft extending from said housing;

an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw;

a firing system including a firing member movable through a staple firing stroke between a first position and a second position;

a sensor that outputs a signal including an indication of the position of said firing member between said first position and said second position of the staple firing stroke; and

a remote computer console including a viewing screen, said remote computer console communicatively connected to said sensor, said remote computer console receiving the indication of the position of said firing member between said first position and said second position.

26. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 25 , further including a staple cartridge including a plurality of staples removably stored therein, the staple firing stroke discharging said plurality of staples.

27. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 25 , wherein said firing member comprises a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during the staple firing stroke.

28. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 25 , further comprising:

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said shaft;

an articulation drive operable to articulate said end effector; and

a second sensor that outputs a signal including an indication of the orientation of said end effector, said remote computer console communicatively connected to said second sensor, said remote computer console receiving the indication of the orientation of said end effector.

29. A surgical stapling instrument system, comprising:

a stapling implement, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw; and

a firing member movable through a staple firing stroke between a first position and a second position;

a processor configured to process data including an indication of the position of said firing member between said first position and said second position of said staple firing stroke; and

a remote console comprising a viewing screen, wherein said remote console is positioned remotely with respect to said stapling implement, and wherein said remote console is configured to receive the indication of the position of said firing member between said first position and said second position.

30. The surgical stapling instrument system of claim 29 , further including a staple cartridge including a plurality of staples removably stored therein, the staple firing stroke discharging said plurality of staples.

31. The surgical stapling instrument system of claim 29 , wherein said firing member comprises a first cam configured to engage said first jaw and a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during the staple firing stroke.
