Abstract

A wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle may include an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle, and an outer rim surrounding the hub. The wheel assembly may also include gas springs operatively coupled between the inner rim and the outer rim to provide a gas suspension for relative movement between the inner rim and the outer rim. The wheel assembly may also include a disk coupled to the inner rim and defining a closeable gap with adjacent interior portions of the outer rim to define a mechanical stop to limit relative movement of the inner rim and outer rim.

Claims (36)

1. A wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle, the wheel assembly comprising:

an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle;

an outer rim surrounding the hub and defining a continuous outer surface;

a plurality of gas springs coupled to said inner rim and said outer rim to provide a gas suspension for relative movement between said inner rim and said outer rim; and

a disk coupled to said inner rim and defining a closeable gap with adjacent interior portions of said outer rim to define a mechanical stop to limit relative movement between said inner rim and outer rim;

said plurality of gas springs being arranged on at least one of an inboard side and an outboard side of said disk.

2. The wheel assembly of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of gas springs have an operating stroke permitting said disk to define the mechanical stop.

3. The wheel assembly of claim 1 , wherein said disk comprises a plurality of weight-reduction openings therein.

4. The wheel assembly of claim 3 , wherein said plurality of weight-reduction openings comprises a plurality of circular openings.

5. The wheel assembly of claim 1 , wherein said disk comprises a plurality of spaced apart thickened wall portions.

6. The wheel assembly of claim 5 , comprising a respective attachment bracket for each gas spring coupled adjacent a respective thickened wall portion of said disk.

7. The wheel assembly of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of gas springs are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of said disk.

8. The wheel assembly of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of gas springs diverge outwardly from said inner rim to said outer rim.

9. The wheel assembly of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of inboard lateral stops carried by an inboard interior surface of said outer rim, and a plurality of outboard lateral stops carried by an outboard interior surface of said outer rim; and wherein said plurality of inboard lateral stops and said plurality of outboard lateral stops cooperate to limit relative lateral movement between said disk and said outer rim.

10. The wheel assembly of claim 9 , wherein said disk comprises a plurality of spaced apart thickened wall portions, each thickened wall portion being positioned between a pair of inboard and outboard lateral stops.

11. The wheel assembly of claim 9 , wherein said plurality of inboard lateral stops are biased toward said disk; and wherein said plurality of outboard lateral stops are also biased toward said disk.

12. The wheel assembly of claim 1 , wherein said outer rim has a diameter of at least 3.5 feet.

13. The wheel assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of said plurality of gas springs comprises a double-acting gas cylinder and associated piston.

14. A wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle, the wheel assembly comprising:

an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle;

an outer rim surrounding the hub;

a disk coupled to said inner rim and defining a closeable gap with adjacent interior portions of said outer rim to define a mechanical stop to limit relative movement between said inner rim and outer rim; and

a plurality of gas springs operatively coupled between said inner rim and said outer rim to provide a gas suspension for relative movement between said inner rim and said outer rim, said plurality of gas springs being arranged in pairs on opposite sides of said disk, and each of said plurality of gas springs having an operating stroke permitting said disk to define the mechanical stop.

15. The wheel assembly of claim 14 , wherein said disk comprises a plurality of weight-reduction openings therein.

16. The wheel assembly of claim 15 , wherein said plurality of weight-reduction openings comprises a plurality of circular openings.

17. The wheel assembly of claim 14 , wherein said disk comprises a plurality of spaced apart thickened wall portions.

18. The wheel assembly of claim 17 , comprising a respective attachment bracket for each gas spring coupled adjacent a respective thickened wall portion of said disk.

19. The wheel assembly of claim 14 , wherein said plurality of gas springs diverge outwardly from said inner rim to said outer rim.

20. The wheel assembly of claim 14 , comprising a plurality of inboard lateral stops carried by an inboard interior surface of said outer rim, and a plurality of outboard lateral stops carried by an outboard interior surface of said outer rim; and wherein said plurality of inboard lateral stops and said plurality of outboard lateral stops cooperate to limit relative lateral movement between said disk and said outer rim.

21. A method of making a wheel assembly to be coupled to a hub of a vehicle, the method comprising:

coupling a plurality of gas springs to an inner rim to be coupled to the hub of the vehicle and to an outer rim surrounding the hub to provide a gas suspension for relative movement between the inner rim and the outer rim, the outer rim defining a continuous outer surface; and

coupling a disk to the inner rim that defines a closeable gap with adjacent interior portions of the outer rim to define a mechanical stop to limit relative movement between the inner rim and outer rim and with the plurality of gas springs being arranged on at least one of an inboard side and an outboard side of said disk.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of gas springs have an operating stroke permitting the disk to define the mechanical stop.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the disk comprises a plurality of spaced apart thickened wall portions.

24. The method of claim 23 , comprising coupling a respective attachment bracket for each gas spring adjacent a respective thickened wall portion of the disk.

25. The method of claim 21 , comprising positioning a plurality of inboard lateral stops carried by an inboard interior surface of the outer rim, and positioning a plurality of outboard lateral stops carried by an outboard interior surface of the outer rim; and wherein the plurality of inboard lateral stops and the plurality of outboard lateral stops cooperate to limit relative lateral movement between the disk and the outer rim.
