Abstract

A laser resonator includes a gain medium that produces light from pump energy and a variable light attenuator, which receives light and emits either (i) a first light including a continuous series of micropulses, or (ii) a second light including a series of macropulses at spaced time intervals, where each macropulse includes a series of micropulses. Each micropulse has a duration of 0.1 to 10 microseconds, and a duration of each macropulse is less than the time interval between each macropulse, and the micropulses have a frequency of 5 kHz to 40 kHz.

Claims (27)

1. A laser apparatus comprising:

a pump module configured to provide a pump energy; and

a laser resonator comprising:

a gain medium configured to produce a light from the pump energy;

a variable light attenuator that receives the light; and

a controller configured to switch the variable light attenuator between:

a first mode, wherein a first light including a continuous series of micropulses is emitted from the laser apparatus; and

a second mode, wherein a second light including a series of macropulses at spaced time intervals is emitted from the laser apparatus, wherein each macropulse includes a series of micropulses, wherein each successive one of the macropulses has a magnitude greater than a magnitude of a preceding macropulse, and the micropulses have a frequency of 5 kHz to 40 kHz.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an optical coupler configured to introduce the first and/or second light into an optical fiber.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the optical fiber includes a side-firing delivery tip.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to respond to one or more input devices operable to switch the variable attenuator between the first and second modes.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller further includes:

a driver configured to produce a driver signal, the driver having an input for turning the driver signal on and off, such that when the driver signal is on, the variable light attenuator attenuates more light than when the driver signal is off; and

a timer configured to provide a cyclical timer signal in the first mode and a static timer signal in the second mode, the timer having a frequency input that defines the frequency of the cyclical timer signal and a duration input that defines a length of time that the timer signal turns the driver signal off during the cyclical timer signal.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a processor executing computer-executable instructions and configured to instruct the controller to control the emission of the second light such that:

the time interval between each macropulse in the series of macropulses is greater than a time interval between each micropulse in each series of micropulses; and

the duration of each macropulse in the series of macropulses is less than the time interval between each macropulse.

7. A controller comprising:

a driver configured to generate a driver signal for operating a variable light attenuator; and

a timer configured to generate a timer signal for switching the driver signal between:

a first mode, in which the timer signal is cyclical and the variable light attenuator emits a first light as a continuous series of micropulses; and

a second mode, in which the timer signal is static and the variable light attenuator emits a second light as a series of macropulses at spaced time intervals, wherein each macropulse includes a series of micropulses, wherein each micropulse has a duration of 0.1 to 10 microseconds, wherein a duration of each macropulse is less than the time interval between each macropulse, and wherein the micropulses have a frequency of 5 kHz to 40 kHz.

8. The controller of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured such that an intensity of the first or second light is dependent upon a magnitude of the driver signal.

9. The controller of claim 8 , wherein the driver is configured to receive a magnitude value used to set the magnitude of the driver signal.

10. The controller of claim 9 , wherein the driver includes a processor executing computer-executable instructions for determining the magnitude value.

11. The controller of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to determine the magnitude value so that each macropulse assumes a predetermined shape.

12. The controller of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured such that an interval between each macropulse is greater than an interval between the micropulses within each macropulse.
