Abstract

A genetically modified fruit-producing plant, said plant having sufficiently reduced total Polyphenol Oxidase (PPO) activity relative to a wild type of said plant to reduce browning in the fruit of said plant relative to said wild type, wherein the reduced total PPO activity results from a reduction in activity of at least two PPO isoenzymes in said plant relative to said wild type, or a cell, seed, seedling, part, tissue, cell, fruit or progeny of said plant.

Claims (13)

1. A genetically modified apple plant, wherein said apple plant is genetically modified to comprise at least one heterologous nucleic acid molecule comprising at least 20 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 20 contiguous nucleotides of a first nucleotide sequence and at least 20 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 20 contiguous nucleotides of a second nucleotide sequence, wherein the first and second nucleotide sequences are selected from two different nucleotide sequences selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 30, SEQ ID NO: 31, SEQ ID NO: 32, and SEQ ID NO: 33.

2. A genetically modified cell, seed, seedling, part, tissue, fruit or progeny of the genetically modified apple plant of claim 1 .

3. The genetically modified apple plant of claim 1 , wherein said apple plant is genetically modified to comprise at least one heterologous nucleic acid molecule comprising at least 50 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 50 contiguous nucleotides of the first nucleotide sequence and at least 50 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 50 contiguous nucleotides of the second nucleotide sequence.

4. The genetically modified apple plant of claim 3 , wherein said apple plant is genetically modified to comprise at least one heterologous nucleic acid molecule comprising at least 100 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 100 contiguous nucleotides of the first nucleotide sequence and at least 100 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 100 contiguous nucleotides of the second nucleotide sequence.

5. A genetically modified apple plant, wherein said apple plant is genetically modified to comprise at least one heterologous nucleic acid molecule comprising at least a first nucleotide sequence and a second nucleotide sequence, wherein the first and second nucleotide sequences are different from each other and are selected from the group consisting of nucleotide sequences that are at least 90% identical to SEQ ID NO: 30, SEQ ID NO: 31, SEQ ID NO: 32, and SEQ ID NO: 33.

6. The genetically modified apple plant of claim 5 , wherein said apple plant is genetically modified to comprise at least one heterologous nucleic acid molecule comprising at least a first nucleotide sequence and a second nucleotide sequence, wherein the first and second nucleotide sequences are different from each other and are selected from the group consisting of nucleotide sequences that are at least 95% identical to SEQ ID NO: 30, SEQ ID NO: 31, SEQ ID NO:32, and SEQ ID NO: 33.

7. The genetically modified apple plant of claim 6 , wherein said apple plant is genetically modified to comprise at least one heterologous nucleic acid molecule comprising at least the first nucleotide sequence and the second nucleotide sequence, wherein the first and second nucleotide sequences are selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 30, SEQ ID NO: 31, SEQ ID NO: 32, and SEQ ID NO: 33.

8. A nucleic acid construct comprising at least 20 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 20 contiguous nucleotides of a first nucleotide sequence and at least 20 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 20 contiguous nucleotides of a second nucleotide sequence, wherein the first and second nucleotide sequences are selected from two different nucleotide sequences selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 30, SEQ ID NO: 31, SEQ ID NO: 32, and SEQ ID NO: 33.

9. The nucleic acid construct of claim 8 , further comprising at least 20 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 20 contiguous nucleotides of a third nucleotide sequence, wherein the third nucleotide sequence is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 30, SEQ ID NO: 31, SEQ ID NO: 32, and SEQ ID NO: 33, and wherein the third nucleotide sequence is different from the first and second nucleotide sequences.

10. The nucleic acid construct of claim 9 , comprising at least 20 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 20 contiguous nucleotides of SEQ ID NO: 30; at least 20 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 20 contiguous nucleotides of SEQ ID NO: 31; at least 20 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 20 contiguous nucleotides of SEQ ID NO: 32; and at least 20 contiguous nucleotides 100% identical to at least 20 contiguous nucleotides of SEQ ID NO: 33.

11. A nucleic acid construct comprising at least a first nucleotide sequence and a second nucleotide sequence, wherein the first and second nucleotide sequences are selected from two different nucleotide sequences selected from the group consisting of sequences that are 90% identical to SEQ ID NO: 30, SEQ ID NO: 31, SEQ ID NO: 32, and SEQ ID NO: 33.

12. The nucleic acid construct of claim 11 , wherein the first nucleotide sequence and the second nucleotide sequence are at least 95% identical to two different nucleotide sequences selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 30, SEQ ID NO: 31, SEQ ID NO: 32, and SEQ ID NO: 33.

13. The nucleic acid construct of claim 11 , wherein the first nucleotide sequence and the second nucleotide sequence are two different nucleotide sequences selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 30, SEQ ID NO: 31, SEQ ID NO: 32, and SEQ ID NO: 33.
