Abstract

A gas-fired atmospheric pressure steam humidifier having high efficiency and ultra-low NOx(3) emissions is disclosed. In some examples, the gas-fired humidifier can have an efficiency of greater than 90 percent and a NOx(3) output of less than 20 parts per million (ppm). In one aspect, the humidifier includes a secondary heat exchanger having a first heat exchange section for pre-heating combustion air and a separate second heat exchange section for pre-heating make-up water, wherein the first and second heat exchange sections are in heat transfer communication with exhaust gases generated by the gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly. In some examples, the first heat exchange section includes orifices for enabling flue gas recirculation.

Claims (23)

1. A gas-fired humidifier comprising:

a. an atmospheric pressure storage tank for holding a volume of water, the storage tank having a make-up water inlet and a steam outlet;

b. a gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly;

c. a primary heat exchanger connected to the gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly, the primary heat exchanger being located within the atmospheric pressure storage tank and configured to heat the volume of water to generate steam;

d. a first heat exchange section for heating a first fluid stream, wherein the first fluid stream is an air stream received by an air inlet of the gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly; and

e. a second heat exchange section for heating a second fluid stream, wherein the second fluid stream is an inlet water stream in fluid communication with the make-up water inlet of the storage tank;

f. wherein the first and second heat exchange sections receive exhaust gases generated and discharged by the gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly, wherein the first heat exchange section and the second heat exchange section are provided within a common outer shell and are separated from each other by a divider plate.

2. The gas-fired humidifier of claim 1 , wherein the first heat exchange section is upstream of the second heat exchange section with respect to the exhaust gases generated by the gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly.

3. The gas-fired humidifier of claim 1 , wherein the first and second heat exchange sections are shell and tube heat exchangers.

4. The gas-fired humidifier of claim 3 , wherein the shell and tube heat exchangers each include a plurality of tubes in fluid communication with the exhaust gases.

5. The gas-fired humidifier of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the tubes or a bottom tubesheet includes at least one orifice opening into the first heat exchange section.

6. A gas-fired humidifier comprising:

a. an atmospheric pressure storage tank for holding a volume of water, the storage tank having a make-up water inlet and a steam outlet;

b. a gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly;

c. a primary heat exchanger connected to the gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly, the primary heat exchanger being located within the storage tank and configured to heat the volume of water to generate steam;

d. wherein the gas-fired humidifier exchanges heat between flue gases, generated by the gas fired burner and combustion blower assembly, and intake air fed to the gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly and exchanges heat between the flue gases and water delivered to the make-up water inlet to achieve a thermal efficiency of greater than 90 percent and a NOx(3) output of less than 20 parts per million (ppm); and

e. a secondary heat exchanger having a first heat exchange section for heating a first fluid stream and a separate second heat exchange section for heating a second fluid stream, the first and second heat exchange sections being in heat transfer communication with exhaust gases generated by the gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly, wherein the first fluid stream is a combustion air stream in fluid communication with an inlet of the gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly.

7. The gas-fired humidifier of claim 6 , wherein the second fluid stream is an inlet water stream in fluid communication with the make-up water inlet of the storage tank.

8. The gas-fired humidifier of claim 6 , wherein the first heat exchange section is upstream of the second heat exchange section with respect to the exhaust gases generated by the gas-fired burner and combustion blower assembly.

9. The gas-fired humidifier of claim 6 , wherein the secondary heat exchanger is a shell and tube heat exchanger.

10. The gas-fired humidifier of claim 9 , wherein the shell and tube heat exchanger includes a plurality of tubes in fluid communication with the exhaust gases.

11. The gas-fired humidifier of claim 10 , wherein the first heat exchange section is separated from the second heat exchange section by a divider plate and wherein the plurality of tubes extends through the divider plate.

12. The gas-fired humidifier of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the tubes includes at least one orifice opening into the first heat exchange section of the secondary heat exchanger.
