Abstract

A forceps includes first and second shafts, each having a jaw member disposed at a distal end thereof. At least one jaw member is moveable from an open to a closed position for grasping tissue therebetween. At least one jaw member is configured for reciprocation of a blade therethrough. A trigger assembly includes a trigger and at least one linkage coupled to the trigger and to the blade such that rotation of the trigger translates the blade between the retracted and the extended position. An interference member moveable between a locked position and an unlocked position is also provided. The interference member is configured to engage the linkage(s) when in the locked position to inhibit translation of the blade from the retracted to the extended position.

Claims (33)

1. A forceps, comprising:

first and second shafts each having a jaw member disposed at a distal end thereof, the first and second shafts configured to rotate about a pivot to move the jaw members relative to each other;

a blade configured to cut tissue disposed between the jaw members;

a trigger operably coupled to the blade and rotatable to actuate the blade to cut tissue disposed between the jaw members;

an interference member configured to rotate into engagement with the trigger to prevent rotation of the trigger, the interference member defining a slot; and

a protrusion extending from the first shaft toward the second shaft and having a pin extending therefrom configured to be received within the slot, the pin configured to translate along the slot to rotate the interference member.

2. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the second shaft is configured to move the protrusion toward the first shaft upon approximation of the first and second shafts to translate the pin along the slot to rotate the interference member out of engagement with the trigger.

3. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the protrusion is configured to move toward the second shaft upon movement of the first and second shafts away from each other to translate the pin along the slot to rotate the interference member into engagement with the trigger.

4. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the second shaft is configured to move the protrusion toward the first shaft upon approximation of the first and second shafts to translate the pin from a proximal end portion of the slot to a distal end portion of the slot to rotate the interference member out of engagement with the trigger.

5. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the protrusion is configured to move toward the second shaft upon movement of the first and second shafts away from each other to translate the pin from a distal end portion of the slot to a proximal end portion of the slot to rotate the interference member into engagement with the trigger.

6. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the protrusion is disposed on a distal portion of a leaf spring housed within the first shaft and configured to bias the protrusion toward the second shaft.

7. The forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a linkage extending from the trigger, the linkage coupled to a spring configured to bias the blade to a retracted position.

8. The forceps according to claim 7 , further comprising a bar linkage having a distal end portion connected to the blade and a proximal end portion connected to the linkage extending from the trigger.

9. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the jaw members includes a blade channel extending at least partially therethrough and configured to receive the blade.

10. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the jaw members includes an electrically conductive sealing surface adapted to electrically connect to a source of electrosurgical energy.

11. The forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising an actuator configured to be depressed by one of the first or second shafts to control delivery of electrosurgical energy to the jaw members.

12. The forceps according to claim 11 , wherein the actuator is disposed proximal to the trigger.

13. A forceps, comprising:

first and second shafts each having a jaw member disposed at a distal end thereof, the first and second shafts configured to rotate about a pivot to move the jaw members relative to each other;

a trigger coupled to the first shaft and rotatable to actuate a blade to cut tissue disposed between the jaw members;

an interference member configured to rotate into engagement with the trigger to prevent rotation of the trigger; and

a protrusion extending from the first shaft toward the second shaft and having a pin extending therefrom coupling the protrusion to the interference member, the second shaft configured to move the protrusion toward the first shaft upon approximation of the first and second shafts to translate the pin relative to the interference member and rotate the interference member out of engagement with the trigger.

14. The forceps according to claim 13 , wherein the protrusion is configured to move toward the second shaft upon movement of the first and second shafts away from each other to translate the pin relative to the interference member and rotate the interference member into engagement with the trigger.

15. The forceps according to claim 13 , wherein the interference member defines a slot configured to receive the pin, the second shaft configured to move the protrusion toward the first shaft upon approximation of the first and second shafts to translate the pin along the slot to rotate the interference member out of engagement with the trigger.

16. The forceps according to claim 13 , wherein the interference member defines a slot configured to receive the pin, the protrusion configured to move toward the second shaft upon movement of the first and second shafts away from each other to translate the pin along the slot to rotate the interference member into engagement with the trigger.

17. The forceps according to claim 13 , wherein the interference member defines a slot configured to receive the pin, the second shaft configured to move the protrusion toward the first shaft upon approximation of the first and second shafts to translate the pin from a proximal end portion of the slot to a distal end portion of the slot to rotate the interference member out of engagement with the trigger.

18. The forceps according to claim 13 , wherein the interference member defines a slot configured to receive the pin, the protrusion configured to move toward the second shaft upon movement of the first and second shafts away from each other to translate the pin from a distal end portion of the slot to a proximal end portion of the slot to rotate the interference member into engagement with the trigger.

19. The forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the protrusion is disposed on a distal portion of a leaf spring housed within the first shaft and configured to bias the protrusion toward the second shaft.

20. A forceps, comprising:

first and second shafts each having a jaw member disposed at a distal end thereof, the first and second shafts configured to rotate about a pivot to move the jaw members relative to each other;

a trigger coupled to the first shaft and rotatable to actuate a blade to cut tissue disposed between the jaw members;

a protrusion extending from the first shaft toward the second shaft; and

an interference member coupled to the protrusion and configured to rotate into engagement with the trigger to prevent rotation of the trigger, the interference member defining a slot configured to receive a portion of the protrusion, the second shaft configured to move the protrusion toward the first shaft upon approximation of the first and second shafts to translate the portion of the protrusion along the slot and rotate the interference member out of engagement with the trigger.
