Abstract

The invention is directed to the removal of serum gal-3 from circulation by plasmapheresis, comprising at least in part donor apheresis, using gal-3 binding agents in either a fixed bed, or in a form easily removed, such as by being complexed with magnetic particles. This method, on its own, brings a sharp reduction and relief from the inflammation and fibroses that can be induced by circulating gal-3. The process may be combined with the administration of gal-3 binding agents, such as modified citrus pectin, to further lower unbound gal-3 levels, to the point where gal-3 in the tissues may be addressed. This method may also be combined with removal of TNF receptors to provide an effective treatment for cancer.

Claims (5)

1. A method of maintaining homeostatic cellular health in a mammal as measured by at least one of cell adhesion, cell migration, cell invasion, angiogenesis and apoptosis, comprising withdrawing blood from said mammal, passing said blood past a galectin-3 binding molecule such that at least 10% of the level of active galectin-3 in the blood of said mammal is bound to said binding molecule, and returning said withdrawn blood to said mammal without said galectin-3 bound by said binding molecule.

The method of claim 1 , wherein said mammal is monitored following returning said blood, as to at least one of cell adhesion, cell migration, cell invasion, angiogenesis and apoptosis to provide a value indicative of said monitored condition, and said value is correlated with said patient's active galectin-3 level in its blood, so as to provide an indication of said patient's continuing need for treatment.

The method of claim 2 , wherein said method further comprises providing said mammal with an agent selected from the group consisting of a pharmaceutical agent, a chemotherapeutic agent, or a combination thereof, the efficacy of which is reduced by the presence of excessive levels of galectin-3 in the blood, and wherein said pharmaceutical and/or said chemotherapeutic agent is selected at least in part on the basis of said measured value.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said binding molecule is prepared from at least one of a modified citrus pectin, an antibody fragment or an antibody.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said binding molecule is stationary and bound directly or indirectly to a passage way through which blood flows.
