Abstract

A surface cleaning apparatus includes a housing including an upright handle assembly and a base mounted to the handle assembly and adapted for movement across a surface to be cleaned. A fluid delivery system can be provided on the housing and can include a fluid supply chamber and a fluid dispenser. A fluid recovery system can be provided on the housing and include a suction nozzle assembly, a recovery chamber, and a vacuum source to draw fluid from the surface to be cleaned.

Claims (34)

1. A surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:

a housing including an upright handle assembly;

a base mounted to the upright handle assembly and adapted for movement across a surface to be cleaned;

a fluid delivery system provided on the housing comprising a fluid supply chamber and a fluid dispenser in fluid communication with the fluid supply chamber; and

a fluid recovery system provided on the housing, comprising:

a suction nozzle assembly provided on the base and comprising a forward wall, a rearward wall spaced from the forward wall to form a fluid flow path therebetween, and a flexible bellows provided at an upper end of the suction nozzle assembly wherein flexible bellows is configured to contract when the suction nozzle assembly moves upward relative to the base and expands as the suction nozzle assembly moves downward relative to the base;

a recovery chamber; and

a vacuum source in fluid communication with the suction nozzle assembly to draw fluid from the surface to be cleaned through the fluid flow path and deposit the fluid in the recovery chamber.

2. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a recovery tank inlet conduit in fluid communication with the recovery chamber and coupled to the flexible bellows.

3. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 2 wherein the flexible bellows is removably mounted to the recovery tank inlet conduit.

4. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 3 wherein the recovery chamber is defined by a recovery tank assembly configured to be removable from the base.

5. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 4 wherein the recovery tank inlet conduit separates from the flexible bellows when the recovery tank assembly is removed from the base.

6. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 2 wherein the suction nozzle assembly further comprises an elongated outlet in fluid communication with the recovery tank inlet conduit.

7. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 6 wherein the flexible bellows at least partially defines the elongated outlet.

8. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 6 wherein the flexible bellows at least partially surrounds the elongated outlet.

9. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the suction nozzle assembly further comprises a biasing element configured to apply downward pressure on the suction nozzle assembly against the surface to be cleaned.

10. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the suction nozzle assembly further comprises at least one glide surface configured to distribute the weight of the surface cleaning apparatus over the surface to be cleaned.

11. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising at least one end cap removably mounted to the base and coupled to the suction nozzle assembly.

12. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 11 wherein the at least one end cap further comprises a nozzle assembly mounting opening.

13. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 12 , further comprising at least one projection extending from the suction nozzle assembly and configured to be removably received within the corresponding nozzle assembly mounting opening in the at least one end cap.

14. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 11 wherein the nozzle assembly mounting opening is elongated to allow for vertical movement of the suction nozzle assembly relative to the at least one end cap.

15. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 11 wherein the at least one end cap carries an edge brush within a receiver aperture in the end cap.

16. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an agitator assembly comprising at least one horizontal axis brushroll provided on the base and located rearwardly of the suction nozzle assembly.

17. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 16 wherein the agitator assembly is fixed relative to the base when the flexible bellows contracts or expands.

18. A surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:

a housing including an upright handle assembly;

a base mounted to the upright handle assembly and adapted for movement across a surface to be cleaned;

a fluid delivery system provided on the housing comprising a fluid supply chamber and a fluid dispenser in fluid communication with the fluid supply chamber; and

a fluid recovery system provided on the housing, comprising:

a suction nozzle assembly provided on the base and comprising a forward wall, a rearward wall spaced from the forward wall to form a fluid flow path therebetween, and a flexible bellows provided at an upper end of the suction nozzle assembly wherein the suction nozzle assembly is configured to float on the surface to be cleaned via expansion or contraction of the flexible bellows when the base is moved across the surface to be cleaned;

a recovery chamber; and

a vacuum source in fluid communication with the suction nozzle assembly to draw fluid from the surface to be cleaned through the fluid flow path and deposit the fluid in the recovery chamber.

19. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 18 wherein the flexible bellows is configured to contract and expand when the suction nozzle assembly moves upward and downward relative to the base, respectively.

20. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 18 , further comprising a recovery tank inlet conduit in fluid communication with the recovery chamber and coupled to the flexible bellows.
