Abstract

Systems and methods for distinguishing between a gesture tracing out a word and a wiping motion on a touch-sensitive keyboard are disclosed herein. In one aspect, a method includes: displaying a plurality of keys on the touch-sensitive keyboard. The method also includes: detecting a contact at the plurality of keys, followed by a sliding movement of the contact. The method also includes: automatically determining whether the user is tracing out a word. In accordance with a determination that the user is tracing out a word, the method includes: displaying one or more characters. In accordance with a determination that the sliding movement corresponds to a wiping motion, forgoing display of characters contacted during the sliding movement of the contact. The wiping motion includes an input that simultaneously contacts multiple keys and moves as the input remains in contact with multiple keys.

Claims (53)

1. A method of distinguishing between a gesture tracing out a word and a wiping motion on a touch-sensitive keyboard, the method comprising:

at an electronic device that includes a display and a touch-sensitive keyboard:

displaying a plurality of keys on the touch-sensitive keyboard;

detecting a contact at one or more keys of the plurality of keys, followed by a sliding movement of the contact to one or more additional keys of the plurality of keys;

automatically determining, without human intervention, based on the sliding movement of the contact, whether the user is tracing out a word;

in accordance with a determination that the user is tracing out a word using the sliding movement of the contact, displaying, in a text-input area on the display, one or more characters based on respective keys of the touch-sensitive keyboard contacted during the sliding movement of the contact; and

in accordance with a determination that the sliding movement corresponds to a wiping motion, forgoing display, in the text-input area, of characters contacted during the sliding movement of the contact, wherein the wiping motion includes an input that simultaneously contacts multiple keys of the plurality of keys and moves as the input remains in contact with multiple keys of the plurality of keys.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

after the determination that the user is tracing out a word using the sliding movement of the contact and as the sliding movement of the contact travels across the touch-sensitive keyboard, displaying a visual indicator reflecting a path followed by the contact, the path indicating a predetermined number of keys over which the contact has travelled.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, after the determination that the user is tracing out a word using the sliding movement of the contact:

during the sliding movement of the contact, displaying one or more selectable word-completion options based on characters over which the contact has travelled.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the one or more selectable word-completion options displayed during the sliding movement of the contact are displayed directly above the touch-sensitive keyboard on the display.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, after the determination that the user is tracing out a word using the sliding movement of the contact:

while the sliding movement of the contact travels across the touch-sensitive keyboard, automatically, without human intervention, changing a visual characteristic of the keys over which the contact has travelled.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of keys contacted by the contact during the sliding movement of the contact is a punctuation symbol key.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the touch-sensitive keyboard is displayed on a secondary display that is separate from the display of the electronic device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the touch-sensitive keyboard is concurrently displayed on the display of the electronic device and a secondary display that is separate from the display of the electronic device.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more programs configured for execution by one or more processors of an electronic device that includes a display and a touch-sensitive keyboard, the one or more programs comprising instructions for:

displaying a plurality of keys on the touch-sensitive keyboard;

detecting a contact at one or more keys of the plurality of keys, followed by a sliding movement of the contact to one or more additional keys of the plurality of keys;

automatically determining, without human intervention, based on the sliding movement of the contact, whether the user is tracing out a word;

in accordance with a determination that the user is tracing out a word using the sliding movement of the contact, displaying, in a text-input area on the display, one or more characters based on respective keys of the touch-sensitive keyboard contacted during the sliding movement of the contact; and

in accordance with a determination that the sliding movement corresponds to a wiping motion, forgoing display, in the text-input area, of characters contacted during the sliding movement of the contact, wherein the wiping motion includes an input that simultaneously contacts multiple keys of the plurality of keys and moves as the input remains in contact with multiple keys of the plurality of keys.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , including instructions which, when executed by the electronic device, cause the electronic device to:

after the determination that the user is tracing out a word using the sliding movement of the contact and as the sliding movement of the contact travels across the touch-sensitive keyboard, display a visual indicator reflecting a path followed by the contact, the path indicating a predetermined number of keys over which the contact has travelled.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , including instructions which, when executed by the electronic device, cause the electronic device to:

during the sliding movement of the contact, display one or more selectable word-completion options based on characters over which the contact has travelled.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the one or more selectable word-completion options displayed during the sliding movement of the contact are displayed directly above the touch-sensitive keyboard on the display.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , including instructions which, when executed by the electronic device, cause the electronic device to, after the determination that the user is tracing out a word using the sliding movement of the contact:

while the sliding movement of the contact travels across the touch-sensitive keyboard, automatically, without human intervention, change a visual characteristic of the keys over which the contact has travelled.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the plurality of keys contacted by the contact during the sliding movement of the contact is a punctuation symbol key.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the touch-sensitive keyboard is displayed on a secondary display that is separate from the display of the electronic device.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the touch-sensitive keyboard is concurrently displayed on the display of the electronic device and a secondary display that is separate from the display of the electronic device.

17. An electronic device, comprising:

a display;

a touch-sensitive keyboard;

one or more processors; and

memory storing one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:

displaying a plurality of keys on the touch-sensitive keyboard;

detecting a contact at one or more keys of the plurality of keys, followed by a sliding movement of the contact to one or more additional keys of the plurality of keys;

automatically determining, without human intervention, based on the sliding movement of the contact, whether the user is tracing out a word;

in accordance with a determination that the user is tracing out a word using the sliding movement of the contact, displaying, in a text-input area on the display, one or more characters based on respective keys of the touch-sensitive keyboard contacted during the sliding movement of the contact; and

in accordance with a determination that the sliding movement corresponds to a wiping motion, forgoing display, in the text-input area, of characters contacted during the sliding movement of the contact, wherein the wiping motion includes an input that simultaneously contacts multiple keys of the plurality of keys and moves as the input remains in contact with multiple keys of the plurality of keys.

18. The electronic device of claim 17 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

after the determination that the user is tracing out a word using the sliding movement of the contact and as the sliding movement of the contact travels across the touch-sensitive keyboard, displaying a visual indicator reflecting a path followed by the contact, the path indicating a predetermined number of keys over which the contact has travelled.

19. The electronic device of claim 17 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

during the sliding movement of the contact, displaying one or more selectable word-completion options based on characters over which the contact has travelled.

20. The electronic device of claim 19 , wherein the one or more selectable word-completion options displayed during the sliding movement of the contact are displayed directly above the touch-sensitive keyboard on the display.

21. The electronic device of claim 17 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for, after the determination that the user is tracing out a word using the sliding movement of the contact:

while the sliding movement of the contact travels across the touch-sensitive keyboard, automatically, without human intervention, changing a visual characteristic of the keys over which the contact has travelled.

22. The electronic device of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the plurality of keys contacted by the contact during the sliding movement of the contact is a punctuation symbol key.

23. The electronic device of claim 17 , wherein the touch-sensitive keyboard is displayed on a secondary display that is separate from the display of the electronic device.

24. The electronic device of claim 17 , wherein the touch-sensitive keyboard is concurrently displayed on the display of the electronic device and a secondary display that is separate from the display of the electronic device.
