Compositions
The present invention relates to compositions, such as filled and coated papers, comprising microfibrillated cellulose and inorganic particulate material.
1. An article comprising:
i) a paper product comprising a co-processed microfibrillated cellulose and inorganic particulate material composition, wherein the co-processed microfibrillated cellulose is derived from a fibrous substrate in the form of a pulp selected from the group consisting of recycled pulp, papermill broke, papermill waste stream, or waste from a papermill, or a combination thereof; and wherein the microfibrillated cellulose has a fibre steepness of from about 20 to about 50 and a d 50 of from about 25 μm to about 250 μm; and
ii) one or more functional coatings on the paper product.
2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the functional coating is a polymer, a metal, an aqueous composition, or a combination thereof.
3. The article of claim 2 , wherein the functional coating is an aqueous composition comprising a platy or hyper-platy kaolin.
4. The article of claim 1 , which comprises a packaging material.
5. The article of claim 1 , wherein the functional coating is a liquid barrier layer.
6. The article of claim 1 , wherein the functional coating is a printed electronics layer.
7. The article of claim 1 , wherein the paper product comprises from about 0.5 wt. % to about 50 wt. % of the co-processed microfibrillated cellulose and inorganic particulate material composition.
8. The article of claim 1 , wherein the paper product comprises from about 25 wt. % to about 35 wt. % of the co-processed microfibrillated cellulose and inorganic particulate material composition.
9. The article of claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate material is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, dolomite, gypsum, kaolin, halloysite, or ball clay, metakaolin, or fully calcined kaolin, talc, mica, huntite, hydromagnesite, ground glass, perlite, or diatomaceous earth, or combinations thereof.
10. The article of claim 1 , wherein the microfibrillated cellulose has a monomodal particle size distribution.
11. The article of claim 1 , wherein the microfibrillated cellulose has a multimodal particle size distribution.
12. The article of claim 1 , wherein the microfibrillated cellulose has a d 50 ranging from about 50 μm to about 140 μm.
13. The article of claim 1 , wherein the microfibrillated cellulose has a d 50 ranging from about 70 μm to about 130 μm.
14. The article of claim 1 , wherein the microfibrillated cellulose has a d 50 ranging from about 50 μm to about 120 μm.
15. The article of claim 1 , wherein the microfibrillated cellulose has a d 50 ranging from about 30 μm to about 150 μm.
16. The article of claim 1 , wherein the paper product is a paperboard.
17. The article of claim 16 , wherein the paper board is a linerboard or a cardboard.
