Abstract

A rocket landing stabilization system can include one or more upright support structures such as posts, columns, or walls, from which one or more stabilizing elements can be supported. The stabilizing elements can be used to stabilize a rocket as it lands at a landing site. The rocket landing stabilization system can also include a cradle, funnel, or cone to catch or otherwise support a rocket as it lands at the landing site. The rocket landing stabilization system can be located on land or at sea.

Claims (53)

1. A system for stabilizing a landing rocket, comprising:

a first upright support structure;

a second upright support structure;

a third upright support structure;

a fourth upright support structure;

a first lateral support element extending from the first upright support structure to the second upright support structure;

a second lateral support element extending from the second upright support structure to the third upright support structure;

a third lateral support element extending from the third upright support structure to the fourth upright support structure;

a fourth lateral support element extending from the fourth upright support structure to the first upright support structure;

a first stabilizing element extending from the first lateral support element to the third lateral support element and movable along a length of the first lateral support element and along a length of the third lateral support element;

a second stabilizing element extending from the first lateral support element to the third lateral support element and movable independently of the first stabilizing element along the length of the first lateral support element and along the length of the third lateral support element;

a third stabilizing element extending from the second lateral support element to the fourth lateral support element and movable along a length of the second lateral support element and along a length of the fourth lateral support element; and

a fourth stabilizing element extending from the second lateral support element to the fourth lateral support element and movable independently of the third stabilizing element along the length of the second lateral support element and along the length of the fourth lateral support element.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the first stabilizing element is coupled to the first lateral support element at a first coupling element and to the third lateral support element at a second coupling element such that the first coupling element can move along the first lateral support element independently of movement of the second coupling element along the third lateral support element.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the first upright structure comprises a first column, the second upright structure comprises a second column, the third upright structure comprises a third column, and the fourth upright structure comprises a fourth column and the first, second, third, and fourth columns are located with respect to one another to form four corners of a square.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the first upright structure comprises a first wall, the second upright structure comprises a second wall, the third upright structure comprises a third wall, and the fourth upright structure comprises a fourth wall and the first, second, third, and fourth walls are located with respect to one another to form four sides of a square.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the first, second, third, and fourth lateral support elements are located with respect to one another to form four sides of a square.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the first, second, third, and fourth lateral support elements each comprise a rigid beam.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the first, second, third, and fourth stabilizing elements each comprise a flexible cable.

8. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a fifth lateral support element extending from the first upright support structure to the second upright support structure;

a sixth lateral support element extending from the second upright support structure to the third upright support structure;

a seventh lateral support element extending from the third upright support structure to the fourth upright support structure;

an eighth lateral support element extending from the fourth upright support structure to the first upright support structure;

a fifth stabilizing element extending from the fifth lateral support element to the seventh lateral support element and movable along a length of the fifth lateral support element and along a length of the seventh lateral support element;

a sixth stabilizing element extending from the fifth lateral support element to the seventh lateral support element and movable along the length of the fifth lateral support element and along the length of the seventh lateral support element;

a seventh stabilizing element extending from the sixth lateral support element to the eighth lateral support element and movable along a length of the sixth lateral support element and along a length of the eighth lateral support element; and

an eighth stabilizing element extending from the sixth lateral support element to the eighth lateral support element and movable along the length of the sixth lateral support element and along the length of the eighth lateral support element.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the first and second stabilizing elements can move along the first and third lateral support elements independently of motion of the fifth and sixth stabilizing elements along the fifth and seventh lateral support elements.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the third and fourth stabilizing elements can move along the second and fourth lateral support elements independently of motion of the seventh and eighth stabilizing elements along the sixth and eighth lateral support elements.

11. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a funnel.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the funnel is supported on a plurality of springs.

13. The system of claim 11 wherein the funnel has a bottom end and an opening at the bottom end, and includes a flange positioned at the bottom opening.

14. The system of claim 11 wherein a vertical location of the funnel is adjustable.

15. The system of claim 11 wherein the funnel includes a plurality of stabilizing structures configured to grasp an object entering the top of the funnel.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the stabilizing structures are configured to move toward one another to enclose and grasp the object entering the top of the funnel.

17. The system of claim 15 wherein the stabilizing structures are jaws.

18. The system of claim 11 , further comprising:

a fifth lateral support element extending from the first upright support structure to the second upright support structure;

a sixth lateral support element extending from the second upright support structure to the third upright support structure;
