Abstract

Systems, methods, and software are disclosed herein for preventing duplicate indications of events. In an implementation, a computing apparatus determines, in response to an occurrence of an event, that multiple indications of the event would surface in a user interface on the computing apparatus. In response, the computing apparatus suppresses one or more of the multiple indications of the event from surfacing in the user interface and causes only one indication of the event to display on the user interface on the computing apparatus as a result of the occurrence of the event.

Claims (69)

1. A computing apparatus comprising:

one or more computer readable storage media;

a processing system operatively coupled with the one or more computer readable storage media; and

program instructions stored on the one or more computer readable storage media to prevent duplicate indications of events that, when read and executed by the processing system, direct the computing apparatus to at least:

determine, in response to an occurrence of an event, that multiple indications of the event would surface in a user interface on the computing apparatus;

in response to the determining, suppress one or more of the multiple indications of the event from surfacing in the user interface on the computing apparatus; and

cause only one indication of the event to display on the user interface on the computing apparatus as a result of the occurrence of the event.

2. The computing apparatus of claim 1 wherein multiple applications running on the computing apparatus generate the multiple indications of the event.

3. The computing apparatus of claim 2 wherein, to determine that multiple indications of the event would surface in the user interface on the computing apparatus, the program instructions direct the computing apparatus to:

determine that one of the multiple applications is running in a foreground of an operating environment in the computing apparatus; and

in response to determining that the one of the multiple applications is running in the foreground, determine to suppress those of the multiple indications generated by those of the multiple applications not running in the foreground.

4. The computing apparatus of claim 2 wherein, to determine that multiple indications of the event would surface in the user interface on the computing apparatus, the program instructions direct the computing apparatus to:

determine whether a user account logged into at least one of the multiple applications is also logged into at least one other of the multiple applications.

5. The computing apparatus of claim 2 wherein, to determine that multiple indications of the event would surface in the user interface on the computing apparatus, the program instructions direct the computing apparatus to:

monitor, for a period of time after having received at least one of the multiple notifications, for first one of the multiple indications to surface in the user interface; and

if, at an expiration of the period of time, no indication has surfaced, determine to cause only the one indication of the event to display on the user interface on the computing apparatus.

6. The computing apparatus of claim 1 wherein:

the event comprises an incoming call;

at least one of the multiple indications comprises an answer screen for answering the incoming call via an application; and

at least one other of the multiple indications comprises a different answer screen for answering the incoming call via a different application.

7. The computing apparatus of claim 1 wherein:

the event comprises an incoming message;

at least one of the multiple indications comprises an alert message alerting a user of the incoming message;

at least one of the multiple indications comprises a different alert message alerting the user of the incoming message.

8. A method of preventing duplicate indications of events, the method comprising:

in a computing device:

determining, in response to an occurrence of an event, that multiple indications of the event would surface in a user interface on the computing apparatus;

in response to the determining, suppressing one or more of the multiple indications of the event from surfacing in the user interface on the computing apparatus; and

causing only one indication of the event to display on the user interface on the computing apparatus as a result of the occurrence of the event.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein multiple applications running on the computing apparatus generate the multiple indications of the event.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein determining that multiple indications of the event would surface in the user interface on the computing apparatus comprises:

determining that one of the multiple applications is running in a foreground of an operating environment in the computing apparatus; and

in response to determining that the one of the multiple applications is running in the foreground, determining to suppress those of the multiple indications generated by those of the multiple applications not running in the foreground.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein determining that multiple indications of the event would surface in the user interface on the computing apparatus comprises:

determining whether a user account logged into at least one of the multiple applications is also logged into at least one other of the multiple applications.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein determining that multiple indications of the event would surface in the user interface on the computing apparatus comprises:

monitoring, for a period of time after having received at least one of the multiple notifications, for first one of the multiple indications to surface in the user interface; and

if, at an expiration of the period of time, no indication has surfaced, causing only the one indication of the event to display on the user interface on the computing apparatus.

13. The method of claim 8 wherein:

the event comprises an incoming call;

at least one of the multiple indications comprises an answer screen for answering the incoming call via an application; and

at least one other of the multiple indications comprises a different answer screen for answering the incoming call via a different application.

14. The method of claim 8 wherein:

the event comprises an incoming message;

at least one of the multiple indications comprises an alert message alerting a user of the incoming message;

at least one of the multiple indications comprises a different alert message alerting the user of the incoming message.

15. A computing device comprising:

a communication interface configured to receive multiple notifications from a service of an incoming event;

a processing system operatively coupled with the communication interface and configured to at least:

determine whether an application on the computing device will surface an indication of the incoming event in a user interface;

determine to refrain from surfacing any other indications of the incoming event in response to determining that the application will surface the indication of the incoming event; and

determine to surface one or more other indications of the event in response to determining that the application will not surface the indication of the incoming event.

16. The computing device of claim 15 wherein, to determine whether the application on the computing device will surface the indication of the incoming event, the processing system is configured to:

determine whether the application is running in a foreground of the computing device; and

determine to refrain from surfacing the one or more other indications of the incoming event in response to determining that the application is running in the foreground of the computing device.

17. The computing device of claim 15 wherein, to determine whether the application on the computing device will surface the indication of the incoming event, the processing system is configured to:

query the application for status information about the application; and

determine to refrain from surfacing the one or more other indications of the incoming event in response to receiving the status information from the application.

18. The computing device of claim 15 wherein, to determine whether the application on the computing device will surface the indication of the incoming event, the processing system is configured to:

monitor, for a period of time after having received at least one of the multiple notifications, for the indication of the incoming event to surface in the user interface; and

at an expiration of the period of time during which the indication of the incoming event did not surface, determine to surface at least one of the one or more other indications of the incoming event.

19. The computing device of claim 15 wherein:

the incoming event comprises an incoming call;

the indication of the incoming event comprises an answer screen for answering the incoming call via the application; and

at least one of the any other indications of the incoming event comprises a different answer screen for answering the incoming call via a different application.

20. The computing device of claim 15 wherein:

the incoming event comprises an incoming message;

at least one of the one or more indications of the incoming event comprises an alert message alerting a user of the incoming message;

at least one of the one or more other indications of the incoming event comprises a different alert message alerting the user of the incoming message.
