Abstract

Determining pace or speed based on sensor data may include determining an amount of contact time a user's foot has with a workout surface such as the ground. Contact time may be determined by identifying samples in the sensor data that correspond to various events such as a heelstrike, a toe-off and a subsequent heelstrike. In one example, these events may be identified by determining a sequence of three sample values (e.g., a triplet) that exceeds corresponding thresholds. The validity of an identified triplet (e.g., heelstrike, toe-off and heelstrike) may be confirmed by determining whether a difference between a last event sample and a middle event sample is greater than a difference between the middle event sample and an initial event sample. Once confirmed, a contact time may be determined from the triplet. A linear or non-linear relationship may then be applied to the contact time to determine a speed or pace.

Claims (40)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a processed foot-based sensor output signal, the processed foot-based sensor output signal including a plurality of identified triplets, each of the plurality of identified triplets including a first heelstrike event, a toe-off event, and a second heelstrike event;

calculating a plurality of contact times, each of the plurality of contact times corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of identified triplets;

analyzing the plurality of contact times to determine a performance metric; and

responsive to receiving a user request, providing the determined performance metric to a user display device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the processed foot-based sensor output signal includes:

receiving a raw foot-based sensor output signal from an activity monitoring device during an athletic activity performed by a user;

processing the raw foot-based sensor output signal to create the processed foot-based sensor output signal; and

identifying the plurality of identified triplets in the processed foot-based sensor output signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the performance metric includes at least one of a pace of a user and a distance covered by the user during an athletic activity.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein calculating the plurality of contact times includes determining a difference in time between the toe-off event and the first heelstrike event for each of the plurality of identified triplets.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising calculating a plurality of step times, wherein each of the plurality of contact times corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of identified triplets, wherein the performance metric is determined based on at least one of the plurality of contact times and the plurality of step times.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein analyzing the plurality of contact times includes determining an algorithm that correlates contact time to the performance metric.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the algorithm is determined based on empirically derived data associated with a foot-based sensor output signal.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing a filter operation on the processed foot-based sensor output signal, wherein the filter operation removes triplets associated with a contact time exceeding a preset threshold.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the preset threshold is determined based on a predefined number of standard deviations away from a mean contact time value of the processed foot-based sensor output signal.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the processed foot-based sensor output signal includes:

applying a fast fourier transform to a raw foot-based sensor output signal: and

identifying the plurality of identified triplets in the processed foot-based sensor output signal based on identifying locations of relative peak values in fast fourier transform data.

11. A performance monitoring apparatus comprising:

a foot-based sensor; and

at least one processor configured to:

receive a processed foot-based sensor output signal associated with the foot-based sensor, the processed foot-based sensor output signal including a plurality of identified triplets, each of the plurality of identified triplets including a first heelstrike event, a toe-off event, and a second heelstrike event;

calculate a plurality of contact times, each of the plurality of contact times corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of identified triplets;

analyze the plurality of contact times to determine a performance metric; and

responsive to receiving a user request, provide the determined performance metric to a user display device.

12. The performance monitoring apparatus of claim 11 , wherein receiving the processed foot-based sensor output signal includes:

receiving a raw foot-based sensor output signal from an activity monitoring device during an athletic activity performed by a user;

processing the raw foot-based sensor output signal to create the processed foot-based sensor output signal; and

identifying the plurality of identified triplets in the processed foot-based sensor output signal.

13. The performance monitoring apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the performance metric includes at least one of a pace of a user and a distance covered by the user during an athletic activity.

14. The performance monitoring apparatus of claim 11 , wherein calculating the plurality of contact times includes determining a difference in time between the toe-off event and the first heelstrike event for each of the plurality of identified triplets.

The performance monitoring apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to calculate a plurality of step times, wherein each of the plurality of contact times corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of identified triplets, wherein the performance metric is determined based on at least one of the plurality of contact times and the plurality of step times.

16. The performance monitoring apparatus of claim 11 , wherein analyzing the plurality of contact times includes determining an algorithm that correlates contact time to the performance metric.

17. The performance monitoring apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the algorithm is determined based on empirically derived data associated with a foot-based sensor output signal.

18. The performance monitoring apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to perform a filter operation on the processed foot-based sensor output signal, wherein the filter operation removes triplets associated with a contact time exceeding a preset threshold.

19. The performance monitoring apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the preset threshold is determined based on a predefined number of standard deviations away from a mean contact time value of the processed foot-based sensor output signal.

20. The performance monitoring apparatus of claim 11 , wherein receiving the processed foot-based sensor output signal includes:

applying a fast fourier transform to a raw foot-based sensor output signal: and

identifying the plurality of identified triplets in the processed foot-based sensor output signal based on identifying locations of relative peak values in fast fourier transform data.
