Abstract

A system for determining the gender and/or fertility status of avian eggs including a sampling apparatus and an electromagnetic radiation transmitter and detector. In certain embodiments, the transmitter operates in the terahertz range. The sampling apparatus can be coupled to an avian egg. The sampling apparatus includes a vacuum source, a gas collection device, and a membrane that can be positioned in the passageway coupling the vacuum source to the gas collection device. The membrane is capable of capturing volatile organic compounds. The sampling apparatus applies a vacuum from the vacuum source to the gas proximate to the avian egg and directs the gas captured from the vicinity of the egg toward the membrane. Subsequently, the membrane is positioned within the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the transmitter, generating a spectrum which can be analyzed to determine whether the egg is fertile or infertile, and if fertile, whether the egg is male or female. In an embodiment, the captured volatile organic compounds are transferred to a sample chamber where the captured gas is analyzed.

Claims (42)

1. A system for determining the gender and/or fertility status of avian eggs comprising:

a sampling apparatus coupleable, during use, to the avian egg, wherein the sampling apparatus comprises a vacuum source, a gas collection device coupled to the vacuum source and a membrane positioned in the passageway coupling the vacuum source to the gas collection device, wherein the membrane is capable of capturing volatile organic compounds, wherein the sampling apparatus applies a vacuum from the vacuum source to the gas proximate to the avian egg and directs the gas captured from the vicinity of the egg toward the membrane; and

an electromagnetic radiation transmitter and detector, wherein the membrane is positionable within the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the transmitter.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electromagnetic radiation is in the terahertz frequency range.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sampling apparatus further comprises an egg shaped cup, wherein applying a vacuum to the avian egg pulls the avian egg into the egg shaped cup.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the membrane is positioned between the egg shaped cup and the vacuum source such that the captured volatile organic compounds are pulled from the avian egg through the egg shaped cup and onto the membrane.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the vacuum applied to the avian egg is such that the egg can be lifted into the air by the sampling apparatus.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sampling apparatus is incorporated into a vacuum egg handling apparatus.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the vacuum egg handling apparatus comprises a plurality of sampling apparatuses, wherein each of the sampling apparatuses are capable of substantially simultaneously collecting gas proximate to a plurality of avian eggs.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the membrane is removable from the sampling apparatus.

9. A method of determining the gender and/or fertility status of avian eggs using a system as described in any one of claims 1 - 8 , the method comprising:

coupling the sampling apparatus to the avian egg, wherein the sampling apparatus comprises a vacuum source, an gas collection device, and a membrane capable of capturing volatile organic compounds;

operating the sampling apparatus to capture gas proximate to the avian egg via the gas collection device, wherein the sampling apparatus directs the captured gas toward the membrane; and

applying electromagnetic radiation to the membrane, wherein the electromagnetic radiation is preselected to allow the quantity of one or more volatile organic compounds captured in the membrane to be determined.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising transporting the avian egg with the sampling apparatus.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising removing the membrane from the sampling apparatus and applying electromagnetic radiation to the removed membrane.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising moving the sampling apparatus proximate to an electromagnetic radiation transmitter after the captured gas is directed to the membrane.

13. The method of claim 9 , further comprising removing at least a portion of the volatile organic compounds from the membrane, after applying electromagnetic radiation to the membrane.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the volatile organic compounds are removed from the membrane by passing air or an inert gas through the membrane.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the volatile organic compounds are removed from the membrane by passing an electric current through the membrane.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the membrane is removed and discarded after a single read.

17. A system for determining the gender and/or fertility status of avian eggs comprising:

a sampling apparatus coupleable, during use, to the avian egg, wherein the sampling apparatus comprises a vacuum source, a gas collection device coupled to the vacuum source and a sample chamber positioned in the passageway coupling the vacuum source to the gas collection device, wherein the sampling apparatus applies a vacuum from the vacuum source to the gas proximate to the avian egg and directs the gas captured from the vicinity of the egg toward the sample chamber; and

an electromagnetic radiation transmitter and detector, wherein the sample chamber is positionable within the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the transmitter.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the electromagnetic radiation is in the terahertz frequency range.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the sampling apparatus further comprises an egg shaped cup, wherein applying a vacuum to the avian egg pulls the avian egg into the egg shaped cup.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the sample chamber is positioned between the egg shaped cup and the vacuum source such that the captured volatile organic compounds are pulled from the avian egg through the egg shaped cup and onto the sample chamber.

21. The system of claim 19 , wherein the vacuum applied to the avian egg is such that the egg can be lifted into the air by the sampling apparatus.

22. The system of claim 17 , wherein the sampling apparatus is incorporated into a vacuum egg handling apparatus.

23. The system of claim 22 , wherein the vacuum egg handling apparatus comprises a plurality of sampling apparatuses, wherein each of the sampling apparatuses are capable of substantially simultaneously collecting gas proximate to a plurality of avian eggs.

24. The system of claim 17 , wherein the sample chamber is removable from the sampling apparatus.

25. The system of claim 17 , further comprising a membrane positioned in the sample chamber, wherein the membrane is capable of capturing volatile organic compounds.

26. A method of determining the gender and/or fertility status of avian eggs using a system as described in any one of claims 17 - 25 , the method comprising:

coupling the sampling apparatus to the avian egg, wherein the sampling apparatus comprises a vacuum source, a gas collection device, and a sample chamber;

operating the sampling apparatus to capture gas proximate to the avian egg via the gas collection device, wherein the sampling apparatus directs the captured gas into the sample chamber; and
