Abstract

A heat exchanger includes a porous material in a cold side flow passage. The porous material is configured to distribute a liquid phase throughout the cold side flow passage through capillary action.

Claims (15)

1. A plate-and-fin type heat exchanger comprising:

a plurality of parallel plates defining:

a plurality of cold side flow channels, and

a plurality of hot side flow channels;

a plurality of fins located in the cold side flow channels and the hot side flow channels, the plurality of fins forming a corrugated cross-sectional profile in each of the plurality of cold side flow channel and each of the plurality of hot side flow channels; and

a porous material located in each of the plurality of cold side flow channels;

wherein a ratio of a total pore volume to a total geometric volume of the porous material is in a range of about 30% to about 80%.

2. The heat exchanger of claim 1 , wherein the porous material includes pores having diameters in a range of 1 μm to 10 μm.

3. The heat exchanger of claim 1 , wherein the porous material has a thickness in a range of 0.030 inches to 0.200 inches.

4. The heat exchanger of claim 1 , wherein the porous material comprises a metal matrix and an oxide layer on a surface of the metal matrix.

5. The heat exchanger of claim 4 , wherein the metal matrix is formed from at least one material selected from the group consisting of a nickel-based alloy, a chromia-forming alloy, an alumina-forming alloy, a silica-forming alloy, stainless steel, or a combination thereof.

6. The heat exchanger of claim 4 , wherein the oxide layer comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of chromia, alumina, or silica.

7. The heat exchanger of claim 1 , wherein the porous material has a same chemical composition as a surface of the plurality of parallel plates defining the plurality of cold side flow channels.

8. The heat exchanger of claim 1 , wherein the porous material is disposed in the plurality of cold side flow channels and the plurality of hot side flow channels.

9. The heat exchanger of claim 1 , wherein the porous material comprises a sintered wick material.
