Abstract

A battery system for an electric vehicle includes a first battery module with a first heater and a second battery module with a second heater. The battery system also includes a control system configured to selectively activate the first or the second heater to dissipate energy from the first or the second battery module.

Claims (41)

1. A battery system for an electric vehicle, comprising:

a first battery module including a first heater positioned within the first battery module, wherein the first heater is configured to be powered solely by the first battery module;

a second battery module including a second heater positioned within the second battery module, wherein the second heater is configured to be powered solely by the second battery module; and

a control system configured to:

receive a triggering signal, wherein the triggering signal is indicative of a defect in the second battery module; and

in response to the triggering signal, activate the first heater without activating the second heater to dissipate energy from the first battery module.

2. The battery system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to receive the triggering signal from a source external to the vehicle.

3. The battery system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to receive the triggering signal from a source internal to the vehicle.

4. The battery system of claim 1 , further including a third battery module including a third heater positioned within the third battery module, wherein the third heater is configured to be powered solely by the third battery module.

5. The battery system of claim 1 , wherein the triggering signal is also indicative of disablement of the electric vehicle.

6. The battery system of claim 1 , further including one or more sensors configured to detect a signal indicative of the defect in the second battery module.

7. The battery system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is further configured to deactivate the first heater to stop energy dissipation from the first battery module when a state of charge of the first battery module is below a threshold value.

The battery system of claim 1 , wherein the first battery module further includes a plurality of battery cells and a liquid cooling loop positioned within the first battery module, the liquid cooling loop being configured to transfer heat produced by the first heater out of the first battery module.

9. The battery system of claim 1 , wherein the first battery module includes a first casing enclosing a first plurality of battery cells and the first heater, and the second battery module includes a second casing enclosing a second plurality of battery cells and the second heater.

10. The battery system of claim 9 , wherein the first and second plurality of battery cells include lithium-ion battery cells.

11. A battery system for an electric vehicle, comprising, comprising:

a first battery module including:

a first plurality of battery cells;

one or more first heaters configured to be powered solely by the first plurality of battery cells; and

a first casing enclosing the first plurality of battery cells and the one or more first heaters;

a second battery module, the second battery module including:

a second plurality of battery cells;

one or more second heaters configured to be powered solely by the second plurality of battery cells; and

a second casing enclosing the second plurality of battery cells and the one or more second heaters; and

a control system configured to (a) receive a triggering signal from a source external to the vehicle and (b) in response to the triggering signal, selectively activate the one or more first heaters without activating the one or more second heaters.

12. The battery system of claim 11 , wherein the triggering signal is indicative of a defect in the second battery module.

13. The battery system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more first heaters and the one or more second heaters are PTC heaters.

14. The battery system of claim 11 , wherein the electric vehicle is a heavy-duty vehicle.

15. The battery system of claim 11 , wherein the triggering signal is indicative of disablement of the electric vehicle.

16. A battery system for an electric vehicle, comprising:

a first plurality of battery cells;

a first heater configured to be powered solely by the first plurality of battery cells to selectively dissipate energy from the first plurality of battery cells;

a second plurality of battery cells;

a second heater configured to be powered solely by the second plurality of battery cells to selectively dissipate energy from the second plurality of battery cells; and

a control system configured to:

receive a first triggering signal and activate the first heater without activating the second heater, wherein the first triggering signal is a signal indicative of a defect in the second plurality of battery cells; and

receive a second triggering signal and activate the second heater without activating the first heater, wherein the second triggering signal is a signal indicative of a defect in the first plurality of battery cells.

The battery system of claim 16 , wherein the control system is further configured to deactivate the first heater when a state of charge of the first plurality of battery cells is below a threshold value, and deactivate the second heater when a state of charge of the second plurality of battery cells is below a threshold value.

18. The battery system of claim 16 , further including one or more sensors configured to detect at least one of the defect in the first plurality of battery cells or the defect in the second plurality of battery cells.

19. The battery system of claim 16 , wherein at least one of the first triggering signal or the second triggering signal is received from a source external to the vehicle.

20. The battery system of claim 16 , wherein at least one of the first heater or the second heater is a PTC heater.
