Abstract

Orthodontic systems and related methods are disclosed for designing and providing improved or more effective tooth moving systems for eliciting a desired tooth movement and/or repositioning teeth into a desired arrangement. Methods and orthodontic systems of the invention include tooth attachments having improved or optimized parameters selected or modified for more optimal and/or effective application of forces for a desired/selected orthodontic movement. Attachments of the present invention can be customized to a particular patient (e.g., patient-customized), a particular movement, and/or a sub-group or sub-set of patients, and configured to engage an orthodontic tooth positioning appliance worn by a patient, where engagement between the attachment and orthodontic appliance results in application of a repositioning force or series/system of forces to the tooth having the attachment and will generally elicit a tooth movement.

Claims (36)

1. A method for designing a tooth attachment for eliciting a selected movement of a patient's tooth, the method comprising:

receiving a digital model of the patient's tooth;

determining a movement path for eliciting the selected movement when applied to the patient's tooth;

determining a geometry for an attachment based on the determined movement path, wherein the geometry of the attachment extends from an occlusal end to a gingival end, the gingival end of the attachment geometry comprising a clipping plane surface defined by a plurality of clipping plane parameters, the plurality of clipping plane parameters comprising a first angle and a second angle, wherein the determining the geometry comprises:

setting the first angle based on the determined movement path to provide a force in an occlusal-gingival direction, wherein the first angle is relative to an occlusal plane of the patient and is more than 0 degrees relative to the occlusal plane; and

setting the second angle based on the determined movement path to provide a torque about a longitudinal axis of the patient's tooth, wherein the second angle is relative to a second plane extending along the longitudinal axis and a buccal-lingual axis of the patient's tooth and is rotated about the longitudinal axis more than 0 degrees relative to the second plane; and

fabricating the attachment to have the geometry comprising the first and second angles when attached to the patient's tooth.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of clipping plane parameters further comprise one or more of a clipping plane area, a clipping plane width, or a clipping plane length.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the clipping plane area is bounded by a clipping plane polyline and an intersection polyline between the clipping plane surface and a surface of the digital model of the patient's tooth.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the clipping plane width is a distance between a clipping plane polyline and an intersection polyline between the clipping plane surface and a surface of the digital model of the patient's tooth.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the clipping plane length is a length of an intersection polyline between the clipping plane surface and a surface of the digital model of the patient's tooth.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the clipping plane surface is normal to a force of the determined movement path.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the clipping plane surface is bounded by a polyline between the clipping plane surface and the digital model of the patient's tooth.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the occlusal end of the attachment is defined in part by a quarter ellipsoid.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the clipping plane surface intersects a portion of the quarter ellipsoid.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the height of the clipping plane surface as measured from a gingival edge of the clipping plane surface to an occlusal edge of the clipping plane surface is greater than or equal to 3 mm.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a location and orientation for the attachment on the patient's tooth.

12. A method for designing a tooth attachment and activator for eliciting a selected movement of a patient's tooth, the method comprising:

receiving a digital model of the patient's tooth;

determining a force system for eliciting the selected movement when applied to the patient's tooth;

generating an attachment having a geometry based on the determined force system, the attachment extending from an occlusal end to a gingival end, the occlusal end of the attachment geometry comprising a quarter ellipsoid and the gingival end of the attachment geometry comprising a first clipping plane surface being normal to a force of the determined force system and defined by one or more clipping plane parameters, the one or more clipping plane parameters comprising an orientation of the first clipping plane surface at a first angle and a second angle, wherein the first angle is relative to an occlusal plane of the patient and is more than 0 degrees relative to the occlusal plane and wherein the second angle is relative to a second plane extending along the longitudinal axis and a buccal-lingual axis of the patient's tooth and is rotated about the longitudinal axis more than 0 degrees relative to the second plane; and

generating an activator for an aligner having a geometry based on the determined force system, the activator extending from an occlusal end to a gingival end, the occlusal end of the activator geometry comprising a quarter spheroid and the gingival end of the activator geometry comprising a second clipping plane surface at third and fourth angles, different than the first and second angles, the second clipping plane surface configured to engage with the first clipping plane surface to impart the determined force system onto the patient's tooth;

and fabricating the attachment to have the geometry comprising the first and second angles when attached to the patient's tooth.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

determining an activation angle, the activation angle being an angular difference between the first clipping plane and the second clipping plane.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein generating the attachment and generating the activator includes orienting the first clipping plane surface at the first and second angles and the second clipping plane surface at the third and fourth angles based on the activation angle.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the attachment geometry is further defined by an attachment base height extending from the quarter ellipsoid to the patient's tooth.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the activator geometry is further defined by an activator base height extending from the quarter spheroid to the patient's tooth.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the activator base height is greater than the attachment base height.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more clipping plane parameters further comprise one or more of a clipping plane area, a clipping plane width, or a clipping plane length.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein a portion of the clipping plane surface is bounded by a polyline between the clipping plane surface and the digital model of the patient's tooth.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the occlusal end of the attachment is defined in part by the quarter ellipsoid.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the clipping plane surface intersects a portion of the quarter ellipsoid.

22. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

determining a location and orientation for the attachment on the patient's tooth.
