Abstract

A system for use in surgery includes a central body, a visualization system operably connected to the central body, a video rendering system, a head-mounted display for displaying images from the video rendering system, a sensor system, and a robotic device operably connected to the central body. The visualization system includes at least one camera and a pan system and/or a tilt system. The sensor system tracks the position and/or orientation in space of the head-mounted display relative to a reference point. The pan system and/or the tilt system are configured to adjust the field of view of the camera in response to information from the sensor system about changes in at least one of position and orientation in space of the head-mounted display relative to the reference point.

Claims (30)

1. A robotic actuator comprising:

a first body comprising:

a proximal connection component coupling the robotic actuator to a proximal system;

a second body comprising:

a distal connection component coupling the robotic actuator to a first distal system;

at least one of a pulley or a capstan operably coupled with at least one of the first body or the second body;

an actuator cable configured to actuate at least one of the pulley or the capstan thereby moving at least one of the first body or the second body; and

a first contoured surface and a second contoured surface that together form a single contoured pathway through which pass at least two additional cables, one of which is configured to actuate the first distal system and one of which is configured to actuate a second distal system, so that one of the at least two additional cables travels from the proximal system that is coupled to the proximal connection component to the first distal system that is coupled to the distal connection component and one of the at least two additional cables travels from the proximal system that is coupled to the proximal connection component to the second distal system; and

wherein a shape and a position of the single contoured pathway are such that the at least two additional cables do not actuate the first distal system nor the second distal system for an entire range of motion for which the robotic actuator is used.

2. The robotic actuator of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the first body or the second body defines at least a string guiding hole for passing of the at least two additional cables.

3. The robotic actuator of claim 1 , further comprising a bearing that constrains a motion of the first body relative to the second body in all degrees of freedom except rotation about one axis perpendicular to a distal-proximal axis of the robotic actuator.

4. The robotic actuator of claim 1 , wherein the single contoured pathway comprises a low-friction material.

5. The robotic actuator of claim 1 , wherein a length of one of the at least two additional cables changes when the actuator cable actuates the at least one of the pulley or the capstan.

6. The robotic actuator of claim 1 , wherein the actuator cable wraps around the at least one of the pulley or the capstan and terminates at a cable termination site.

7. The robotic actuator of claim 5 , wherein a length of one of the at least two additional cables changes by less than 10% as the robotic actuator moves through a range of motion of 110 degrees.

8. The robotic actuator of claim 5 , wherein a length of one of the at least two additional cables changes by less than 5% as the robotic actuator moves through a range of motion of 110 degrees.

9. The robotic actuator of claim 5 , wherein a length of one of the at least two additional cables changes by less than 1% as the robotic actuator moves through a range of motion of 110 degrees.

10. The robotic actuator of claim 1 , further comprising an encoder for measuring relative positions of the first body and the second body when the actuator cable actuates the at least one of the pulley or the capstan.

11. The robotic actuator of claim 1 , further comprising a strain gauge for measuring a force experienced by the robotic actuator when the actuator cable actuates the at least one of the pulley or the capstan.

12. The robotic actuator of claim 1 , wherein the first distal system comprises at least one of a system pulley or a system capstan, and wherein one of the at least two additional cables is configured to actuate at least one of the system pulley or the system capstan, thereby actuating the first distal system.

13. The robotic actuator of claim 1 , wherein the robotic actuator, the proximal system, and the distal system together make up a single robotic arm of a dual-arm surgical robotic system that is controlled by a human interface that provides a human-like surgical interaction to a user of the robotic system.

14. The robotic actuator of claim 13 , further comprising a visualization system that transmits a signal to the human interface.

15. The robotic actuator of claim 14 , wherein the signal comprises a visual representation of a surgical field when the robotic system is used during a robotic surgery.

16. The robotic actuator of claim 15 , wherein the human interface uses the visual representation to generate a virtual reality or an augmented reality experience for the user.

17. The robotic actuator of claim 14 , wherein the visualization system is positioned relative to the single robotic arm so that a relationship of the visualization system to the single robotic arm is proportional to a relationship of eyes of the user to an arm of the user.

18. The robotic actuator of claim 5 , wherein a length of one of the at least two additional cables changes by less than 10%.

19. The robotic actuator of claim 5 , wherein a length of one of the at least two additional cables changes by less than 5%.
