Abstract

The present disclosure provides alert implants that comprise a medical device and an implantable reporting processor (IRP), where one example of such a medical device includes a component for a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) such as a tibial extension, a femoral component for hip replacements, a breast implant, a distal rod for arm or leg breakage repair, a scoliosis rod, a dynamic hip screw, a spinal interbody spacer, and tooling and methods that may be used to form the alert implant, and uses of such alert implants in the health maintenance of patients who receive the implant.

Claims (26)

1. An implantable medical device configured for implant in an elongated cavity formed in a bone, the elongated cavity extending from an open end at a surface of the bone to a closed end at a depth within the bone, the implantable medical device comprising:

an electronics assembly including:

a case; and

a printed circuit assembly comprising three rigid printed circuit boards that are each secured to a flexible interconnect and are physically and electrically coupled together by way of the flexible interconnect, where a first and a second of the three rigid printed circuit boards are spaced apart from one another along a first length of the flexible interconnect and the second and a third of the three rigid printed circuit boards are spaced apart from one another along a second length of the flexible interconnect, where the first length of the flexible interconnect is folded between the first and second rigid printed circuit boards and the second length of the flexible interconnect is folded between the second and third rigid printed circuit boards to thereby stack the first rigid printed circuit board between the second rigid printed circuit board and the third rigid printed circuit board, and where the stacked arrangement of the three rigid printed circuit boards and the folded lengths of the flexible interconnect has a form factor that fits within the case;

a power component coupled to the electronics assembly;

an antenna component coupled to and extending longitudinally from the electronics assembly; and

an elongated casing comprising a central section and a radome extending longitudinally from the central section, the elongated casing sized to extend into the elongated cavity with the radome adjacent the closed end of the elongated cavity, wherein the central section comprises an interior configured to house the electronics assembly and the power component, and the antenna component is exterior to the interior of the central section and the radome comprises an interior configured to surround the antenna component.

2. The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein the electronics assembly includes a plurality of sensors configured to monitor a plurality of kinematic parameters.

3. The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein the electronics assembly includes at least one sensor configured to monitor pressure.

4. The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein the electronics assembly includes a plurality of sensors configured to monitor biologic parameters associated with at least one of temperature, pH, and biomarkers associated with infection.

The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein each of the three rigid printed circuit boards has a plurality of perimeter edges defining a generally rectangular form, and the perimeter edge of the first rigid printed circuit board facing a first end of the case has a dimension greater than the perimeter edge of the second rigid printed circuit board facing the first end and the perimeter edge of the third rigid printed circuit board facing the first end.

The implantable medical device of claim 5 , wherein the case has a circular cross-section with a diameter, and the dimension of the perimeter edge of the first rigid printed circuit board facing the first end of the case is closer to the diameter than the dimension of the perimeter edge of the second rigid printed circuit board facing the first end and the dimension of the perimeter edge of the third rigid printed circuit board facing the first end.

The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein each of the three rigid printed circuit boards has a surface with circuitry mounted thereto, and the three rigid printed circuit boards are stacked such that the surface of each rigid printed circuit board faces at least one surface of another rigid printed circuit board.

8. The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein the printed circuit assembly further comprises a clip and a header assembly, wherein the clip is configured to affix the printed circuit board assembly relative to the header assembly.

9. The implantable medical device of claim 8 , wherein:

the clip comprises a first arm located relative to a first side of the printed circuit board assembly and a second arm located relative to a second side of the printed circuit board assembly, and

the header assembly comprises a first feature configured to engage with a first feature of the first arm and a second feature configured to engage with a second feature of the second arm.

10. The implantable medical device of claim 8 , wherein the clip is configured to fit within the case.

11. The implantable medical device of claim 8 , wherein the header assembly is hermetically sealed to the first end of the case.

The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein the central section of the elongated casing comprises a cylindrical void having a diameter, the electronics assembly is characterized by a diameter sized for insertion into the cylindrical void, the power component is characterized by a diameter sized for insertion into the cylindrical void, and the diameters of the electronics assembly and the power component are substantially equal.

13. The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first, the second, and the third of the three rigid printed circuit boards are non-identical to one another.

The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein the first rigid printed circuit board comprises a surface acoustic wave (SAW) chip, the second rigid printed circuit board comprises a central processor unit (CPU) integrated circuit or chip, and the third rigid printed circuit board comprises a memory.

15. The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein the central section and the radome are separate components that are configured to attach to each other.

16. The implantable medical device of claim 1 , wherein the elongated casing comprises a coupling section configured to mechanically couple with an implantable prosthetic device.

17. The implantable medical device of claim 16 , wherein the coupling section is integral with the central section.

18. The implantable medical device of claim 16 , wherein the implantable prosthetic device comprise a receptacle and the coupling section is configured to fit into the receptacle.
