Abstract

The present disclosure provides alert implants that comprise a medical device and an implantable reporting processor (IRP), where one example of such a medical device includes a component for a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) such as a tibial extension, a femoral component for hip replacements, a breast implant, a distal rod for arm or leg breakage repair, a scoliosis rod, a dynamic hip screw, a spinal interbody spacer, and tooling and methods that may be used to form the alert implant, and uses of such alert implants in the health maintenance of patients who receive the implant.

Claims (26)

1. A system, comprising:

a base station;

an implantable prosthesis configured for chronic implant in a patient;

an implantable reporting processor associated with the implantable prosthesis and configured to communicate with the base station, the implantable reporting processor configured to:

perform a test of the implantable prosthesis in response to a command from the base station, wherein to perform the test, the implantable reporting processor is configured to send a message comprising an instruction to move a body part with which the implantable prosthesis is associated, obtain one or more measurements related to a movement of the body part, and generate a record of the one or more measurements; and

a voice-command device configured to:

receive health-status information of the patient and the message,

communicate the health-status information to the base station, and

output the message,

wherein the implantable reporting processor is configured to communicate the record to the base station and the base station is configured to place the health-status information received from the voice-command device in the record received from the implantable reporting processor.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the implantable reporting processor is disposed in the implantable prosthesis.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the implantable reporting processor forms part of the implantable prosthesis.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the voice-command device is configured to receive the health-status information in a form of text.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the voice-command device is configured to receive the health-status information in a form of sound.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the voice-command device is configured to communicate the health-status information to the base station in a form of a sound recording.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the voice-command device is further configured to, prior to receiving the health-status information, output a query related to the health status.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the voice-command device is configured to output the query in one or both of a text form and a sound form.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the voice-command device is further configured to, after receiving health-status information, output a follow-up query related to the health status.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the voice-command device is configured to output the message in one or both of a text form and a sound form.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the message comprises information related to a functional condition of the implantable prosthesis.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the implantable prosthesis is a synthetic joint and the implantable reporting processor comprises one or more sensors configured to obtain at least one kinematic measurement indicative of movement of the synthetic joint, and the implantable reporting processor is configured to activate one or more sensors to perform the test of the implantable prosthesis.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise one or more gyroscopes, accelerometers, temperature sensors, or pressure sensors.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise three accelerometers arranged relative to each other so that each accelerometer provides a measurement of linear movement relative to one of three axes.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise three gyroscopes arranged relative to each other so that each gyroscope provides a measurement of rotational movement relative to one of three axes.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the voice-command device is integrated with the base station.
