Abstract

The present application discloses systems and methods for providing low voltage power for low voltage lighting sources, e.g., so-called landscape lighting. A low voltage lighting power supply includes an enclosure and a power circuit enclosed in the enclosure. In some embodiments the power circuit has a primary side and a secondary side. The primary side accepts power from a main power source and the secondary side has a plurality of separate output power circuits, each output power circuit generating a separate low voltage lighting power signal capable of lighting a plurality of low voltage light sources and each being rated for a particular output.

Claims (66)

1. A low voltage power supply comprising:

a primary side adapted to receive power from a main power source;

a secondary side coupled to the primary side and adapted to provide a low voltage power signal to a plurality of light sources;

a sensor adapted to measure a power-related parameter of at least one of the primary side and the secondary side; and

a control unit adapted to communicate with a remote computer, wherein the control unit is programmed to:

provide the power-related parameter to the remote computer,

receive a lighting command from the remote computer, and

control at least one of the plurality of light sources in response to the lighting command; and

wherein the remote computer is adapted to be located remotely from the control unit and the sensor.

2. The low voltage power supply of claim 1 further comprising:

a first coil adapted to receive a first voltage signal from the primary side; and

a second coil coupled to the first coil and adapted to provide a second voltage signal to the secondary side, wherein the first voltage signal is greater than the second voltage signal.

3. The low voltage power supply of claim 1 , wherein the lighting command is indicative of at least one of turning on at least one of the plurality of light sources, and turning off at least one of the plurality of light sources.

4. The low voltage power supply of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further programmed to:

provide a software user input with which a user can select at least one of the plurality of light sources to control.

5. The low voltage power supply of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is further programmed to:

provide a software user input with which a user can select at least one of the plurality of light sources to control;

receive input indicative of a selected light source; and

provide a graphical interface for displaying on the remote computer indicative of how brightly the selected light source is being controlled.

6. A lighting system comprising:

a first low voltage power supply according to claim 1 ;

a second low voltage power supply according to claim 1 ;

the remote computer, wherein the remote computer comprises one of a smart phone and a tablet computer; and

wherein the control unit is further programmed to provide a software user input to the remote computer with which a user can select at least one of the first low voltage power supply and the second low voltage power supply to control.

7. A lighting system comprising:

a plurality of light sources adapted to emit light;

a primary side adapted to receive power from a main power source;

a secondary side coupled to the primary side and adapted to provide a low voltage power signal to the plurality of light sources;

a sensor adapted to measure a power-related parameter of at least one of the primary side and the secondary side; and

a control unit adapted to communicate with a remote computer, wherein the control unit is programmed to:

provide the power-related parameter to the remote computer,

receive a lighting command from the remote computer, and

control at least one of the plurality of light sources in response to the lighting command;

wherein the remote computer comprises one of a smart phone and a tablet computer.

8. The lighting system of claim 7 further comprising a transformer adapted to receive a first voltage signal from the primary side and provide a second voltage signal to the secondary side, wherein the first voltage signal is greater than the second voltage signal.

9. The lighting system of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of light sources comprises:

a first zone of light sources; and

a second zone of light sources;

wherein the control unit is further programmed to control the first zone of light sources independent of the second zone of light sources.

10. The lighting system of claim 7 , wherein the lighting command is indicative of at least one of turning on at least one of the plurality of light sources and turning off at least one of the plurality of light sources.

11. The lighting system of claim 7 , wherein the control unit is further programmed to:

compare the power-related parameter to a threshold; and

provide output indicative of an alarm to the remote computer in response to the power-related parameter exceeding the threshold.

12. The lighting system of claim 11 , wherein the threshold is indicative of an overload condition.

13. The lighting system of claim 7 , wherein the control unit is further programmed to:

provide a software user input with which a user can select at least one of the plurality of light sources to control.

14. The lighting system of claim 13 , wherein the control unit is further programmed to:

receive input indicative of a selected light source; and

provide the power-related parameter associated with the selected light source to the remote computer.

15. The lighting system of claim 13 , wherein the control unit is further programmed to:

receive input indicative of a selected light source; and

provide a graphical interface displaying to the user on the remote computer an indication of how brightly the selected light source is being controlled based on the power-related parameter.

16. A computer-program product embodied in a non-transitory computer readable medium that is programmed for remotely controlling a lighting system, the computer-program product comprising instructions for:

measuring a power-related parameter of each of a first zone of light sources and a second zone of light sources;

receiving input indicative of a selected light source zone from a remote computer;

providing the power-related parameter associated with the selected light source zone to the remote computer;

receiving a lighting command associated with the selected light source zone from the remote computer;

controlling the selected light source zone in response to the lighting command; and

wherein the medium and the remote computer are not directly connected.

17. The computer-program product of claim 16 , further comprising instructions for:

disabling power to the selected light source zone in response to a lighting command indicative of turning off the selected light source zone.
