Abstract

A warehouse automation system adapted to improve warehouse operating productivity includes a plurality of carts for transporting products within a warehouse and a controller. The controller is adapted to associate a first one of the plurality of carts with a first person and to control the first cart to lead the first person around the warehouse. According to one advantage, the time the first person spends restocking, picking, counting, sorting, moving, and packing product into customer orders and shipments, for example, is reduced.

Claims (27)

1. A motorized cart for transporting products within an area where products are stored, the motorized cart comprising:

first and second platforms for supporting a plurality of receptacles capable of receiving products;

at least one vertical support for supporting the first platform above the second platform, the at least one vertical support disposed at locations within interior portions of the first and second platforms away from peripheral edges of the first and second platforms; and

a user interface screen, mounted to an end of the motorized cart, for communicating information to a first person concerning a product to be picked from the area where products are stored.

2. The motorized cart of claim 1 , wherein the at least one vertical support is substantially centrally-located along respective lengths of the first and second platforms between front and back ends thereof.

3. The motorized cart of claim 1 further comprising at least one removable receptacle disposed on one of the first and second platforms.

4. The motorized cart of claim 1 further comprising up to four removable receptacles disposed on the first and second platforms.

5. The motorized cart of claim 1 , wherein the user interface screen is adapted to identify at least one of the product to be picked, a bin from which the product is to be picked, a location of the bin from which the product is to be picked, or a quantity of the product to be picked.

6. The motorized cart of claim 1 further comprising at least one sensor for identifying an obstacle in a path of the motorized cart.

7. The motorized cart of claim 6 wherein the at least one sensor is laser-based.

8. The motorized cart of claim 1 further comprising lighting adapted to identify a receptacle within which a product is to be placed or from which a product is to be retrieved.

9. The motorized cart of claim 8 wherein the lighting comprises LED strip lighting.

10. The motorized cart of claim 1 further comprising an audio source for communicating information to the first person.

11. The motorized cart of claim 1 further comprising a scanner for reading a product code.

12. The motorized cart of claim 11 , wherein the scanner is located in proximity to the user interface screen.

13. The motorized cart of claim 1 further comprising a motor for propelling the motorized cart.

14. The motorized cart of claim 1 further comprising a transmitter and a receiver for communicating wirelessly over a network.

15. The motorized cart of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of weight sensors, each weight sensor associated with a corresponding receptacle and being adapted to measure a change of weight when a product is placed within the corresponding receptacle.

16. The motorized cart of claim 1 , wherein the area comprises a warehouse.

17. A method for transporting products within an area where products are stored, the method comprising the step of:

controlling and automatically moving a motorized cart for transporting products within the area where products are stored, the motorized cart comprising:

(i) first and second platforms for supporting a plurality of receptacles capable of receiving products;

(ii) at least one vertical support for supporting the first platform above the second platform, the at least one vertical support disposed at locations within interior portions of the first and second platforms away from peripheral edges of the first and second platforms; and

(iii) a user interface screen, mounted to an end of the motorized cart, for communicating information to a first person concerning a product to be picked from the area where products are stored.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the at least one vertical support is substantially centrally-located along respective lengths of the first and second platforms between front and back ends thereof.

19. The method of claim 17 further comprising the step of instructing the first person to meet the motorized cart at a designated location.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the area comprises a warehouse.
