Abstract

An optical connector holding one or more optical ferrule assembly is provided. The optical connector includes an outer body, an inner front body accommodating the one or more optical ferrule assembly, ferrule springs for urging the optical ferrules towards a mating receptacle, and a back body for supporting the ferrule springs. The outer body and the inner front body are configured such that four optical ferrule assembly are accommodated in a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceiver footprint or eight optical ferrule assembly are accommodated in a quad small form-factor pluggable (QSFP) transceiver footprint.

Claims (28)

1. An optical connector, comprising:

a plurality of optical ferrule assemblies;

an outer housing having a front end portion and a rear end portion spaced apart along an axis, the rear end portion being spaced apart from the front end portion in a rearward direction along the axis, the outer housing having a longitudinal bore extending along the axis from the rear end portion through the front end portion such that the front end portion includes at least one opening to the longitudinal bore, the outer housing being configured to be received in a receptacle;

at least one inner front body received in the outer housing longitudinal bore, the inner front body being configured to hold the optical ferrule assemblies in the outer housing such that a ferrule of each of the optical ferrule assemblies is exposed through the at least one opening in the front end portion of the outer housing for making an optical connection when the outer housing is received in the receptacle and when the inner front body is received in the outer housing, the inner front body comprising top and bottom portions and opposing first and second sidewalls each having an opening therein;

a plurality of ferrule springs for urging the plurality of optical ferrule assemblies towards the mating receptacle; and

a back body for supporting the ferrule springs;

wherein the front body has a rear end and the back body has a front end;

wherein the back body is configured to couple to the front body such that at least one of (i) the back body protrudes along the axis in the rearward direction from the rear end of the front body and (ii) the front body protrudes along the axis in a forward direction opposite the rearward direction from the front end of the back body;

wherein each ferrule spring has opposite side portions spaced apart along a width of the ferrule spring, and at least one of the opposite side portions of each ferrule spring extends into the opening of one of the side walls of the front body; and

wherein the front body further comprises a wall for separating the ferrule springs from each other.

2. The optical connector of claim 1 , further comprising a flap in the outer housing having a retainer on the inner side thereof for holding the front body to the outer housing.

3. The optical connector of claim 1 , further comprising a push-pull tab on the outer housing for inserting or removing the optical connector from a mating component.

4. The optical connector of claim 3 , wherein the push-pull tab includes a recess or a release hole for insertion of a finger or a release tool.

5. The optical connector of claim 1 , wherein the inner front body includes an alignment tab for aligning with a receiving recess on the back body.

6. The optical connector of claim 1 wherein the outer housing is configured to hold four optical ferrule assemblies in two inner bodies.

7. An optical cable terminating in the optical connector of claim 1 .

8. A method of reconfiguring an optical cable, comprising:

providing the optical cable of claim 7 ;

removing the outer housing;

inserting the inner front body, the plurality of optical ferrule assemblies, the ferrule springs, and the back body into at least one second outer housing, the second outer housing having greater or lesser optical ferrule capacity than the outer housing.

9. The method of reconfiguring an optical cable according to claim 8 , wherein the outer housing has a two-optical ferrule assembly capacity and the second outer housing has a four-optical ferrule assembly or eight-optical ferrule assembly capacity.

10. The method of reconfiguring an optical cable according to claim 8 , wherein the outer housing has a four-optical ferrule assembly capacity and the at least one second outer housing comprises two second housings, each of the two second housings having a two-optical ferrule assembly capacity.

11. The method of reconfiguring an optical cable according to claim 8 , wherein the outer housing has an eight-optical ferrule assembly capacity and the at least one second outer housing comprises four second housings, each of the four second housings having a two-optical ferrule assembly capacity.

12. The method of reconfiguring an optical cable according to claim 8 , wherein the outer housing has an eight-optical ferrule assembly capacity and the at least one second outer housing comprises two second housings, each of the two second housings having a four-optical ferrule assembly capacity.

13. The method of reconfiguring an optical cable according to claim 8 , wherein the outer housing has an eight-ferrule capacity and the at least one second outer housing comprises three second housings, one of the three second housings having a four-optical ferrule assembly capacity and two of the three second housings having a two-optical ferrule assembly capacity.

14. The optical connector of claim 1 , wherein the optical connector is configured such that four-optical ferrule assembly are accommodated in a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceiver footprint of about 14 mm by 12.5 mm.

15. The optical connector of claim 1 , wherein the optical connector is configured such that eight-optical ferrule assembly are accommodated in a quad small form-factor pluggable (QSFP) transceiver footprint of about 19 mm by 14 mm.

16. The optical connector of claim 1 , wherein the ferrule springs have front ends and the inner front body has a front end portion spaced apart from the front ends of the ferrule springs along the longitudinal axis in the forward direction.
