Abstract

The present invention is directed to a method and device to generate a chemical signature for a mixture of analytes. The present invention involves using a SPME surface to one or both absorb and adsorb the mixture of analytes. In an embodiment of the invention, the surface is then exposed to different temperature ionizing species chosen with appropriate spatial resolution to desorb a chemical signature for the mixture of analytes.

Claims (36)

1. A device comprising:

a wand including a plastic ticket, where the plastic ticket is adapted to contact a sample at a plurality of target areas on the plastic ticket including a first target area of the plurality of target areas and a second target area of the plurality of target areas, where the first target area is a distance from the second target area;

a desorption ionization source adapted to generate a stream of energetic particles at a first temperature at the first target area to form a first plurality of sample ions, where the desorption ionization source is adapted to generate the stream of energetic particles at a substantially constant second temperature at the second target area to form a second plurality of sample ions; and

an analyzer, adapted to analyze one or both the first plurality of sample ions and the second plurality of sample ions.

2. The device of claim 1 , where the plastic ticket comprises one or more materials selected from the group consisting of a filament, an impregnated filament, a sorbent coated filament and a mesh.

3. The device of claim 2 , where the sorbent coated filament comprises polyester.

4. The device of claim 3 , where the sorbent coated filament further comprises polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

5. The device of claim 1 , where the desorption ionization source is selected from the group consisting of DART, DESI, a MALDI source, a UV laser, an IR laser, atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) spray, directed electrospray, electrospray, a dielectric barrier discharge, and a flowing after-glow plasma source.

6. The device of claim 1 , where the analyzer is a mass spectrometer.

7. The device of claim 6 , where the mass spectrometer is a time-of-flight mass spectrometer.

8. The device of claim 1 , where the distance is between:

a lower limit of approximately 1 mm; and

an upper limit of approximately 10 mm.

9. A device comprising:

a wand including a plastic ticket, where the plastic ticket is adapted to contact a sample at a first target area and a second target area on the plastic ticket, where the first target area is a separate region from the second target area;

a mesh;

a power supply adapted to supply an electric current to the mesh, where the mesh is in close proximity to one or both the first target area and the second target area;

a desorption ionization source adapted to generate a stream of energetic particles at a first temperature at the first target area and at a second temperature at the second target area to form a plurality of sample ions, where the second target area has not been exposed to the stream of energetic particles at the first temperature; and

an analyzer, adapted to analyze the plurality of sample ions.

10. The device of claim 9 , where the plastic ticket comprises one or more materials selected from the group consisting of a filament, an impregnated filament, a sorbent coated filament and a mesh.

11. The device of claim 10 , where the sorbent coated filament comprises polyester.

12. The device of claim 11 , where the sorbent coated filament further comprises polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

13. The device of claim 9 , where the desorption ionization source is selected from the group consisting of DART, DESI, a MALDI source, a UV laser, an IR laser, atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) spray, directed electrospray, electrospray, a dielectric barrier discharge, and a flowing after-glow plasma source.

14. The device of claim 8 , where the analyzer is a time-of-flight mass spectrometer.

15. A method of analyzing a sample comprising:

contacting a wand comprising a plastic ticket with a sample, where the plastic ticket is of sufficient size to permit multiple exposure of the plastic ticket to a plurality of different temperature streams of energetic particles from a desorption ionization source;

locating the plastic ticket in close proximity with a mesh;

heating the mesh with an electric current from a power supply;

directing a first stream of energetic particles at a first temperature from the plurality of different temperature streams of energetic particles at a first target area on the plastic ticket, where the first stream of energetic particles forms a plurality of first sample ions, where the second target area has not been exposed to the first stream of energetic particles at the first temperature;

directing a second stream of energetic particles at a second temperature from the plurality of different temperature streams of energetic particles at a second target area on the plastic ticket, where the second area has not been exposed to the first stream of energetic particles at the first temperature, where the second stream of energetic particles forms a plurality of second sample ions; and

analyzing one or both the plurality of first sample ions and the plurality of second sample ions, thereby analyzing the sample.

16. The method of claim 15 , where the plastic ticket comprises polyester.

17. The method of claim 16 , where the plastic ticket further comprises polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

18. The method of claim 15 , where the first stream of energetic particles at a first temperature is generated from a desorption ionization source selected from the group consisting of DART, DESI, a MALDI source, a UV laser, an IR laser, atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) spray, directed electrospray, electrospray, a dielectric barrier discharge, and a flowing after-glow plasma source.
