Actuation and valve mechanism
An arrangement for controlling and measuring flow. The arrangement includes a fluid control barrier and a flow-measuring apparatus upstream of the fluid control barrier. The fluid control barrier includes a pair of plates for opening and closing a pipe, and the plates are movable towards a center line of the pipe to open the pipe and produce a symmetrical flow profile for the flow-measuring apparatus.
1. An arrangement to control and measure a water flow in an irrigation system, comprising:
a fluid control barrier arranged in the water flow of the irrigation system, the fluid control barrier configured to control the water flow in the irrigation system; and
a flow-measuring apparatus arranged upstream of the fluid control barrier in the irrigation system, the flow measuring apparatus configured to measure the water flow in the irrigation system;
the fluid control barrier comprising:
a pair of plates for opening and closing a pipe of the irrigation system,
the plates being movable towards a center line of the pipe to open the pipe and produce a symmetrical flow profile for the flow-measuring apparatus; and
a pair of struts pivotably coupled to the pair of plates on the upstream side of the plates, wherein the pair of struts is configured to move the plates around the pair of struts.
2. The arrangement of claim 1 being at an end of the pipe.
3. The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the fluid control barrier comprises the pair of plates with a hinge along their straight edges to allow for the opening and closing.
4. The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the fluid control barrier includes an actuation mechanism.
5. The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the flow-measuring apparatus is an ultrasonic transit time flow measurement apparatus.
6. The arrangement of claim 1 configured to, based on an amount by which the fluid control barrier is open, modify an output of the flow measuring apparatus.
7. The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the pair of plates form a bi-foldable barrier.
8. A method of measuring and controlling water flow in an irrigation system comprising:
providing a fluid control barrier along a pipe of the irrigation system and a flow-measuring apparatus arranged upstream of the fluid control barrier, the fluid control barrier including a pair of plates and at least one pair of struts arranged on an upstream side of the plates for opening and closing the pipe, and the plates being movable towards a center line of the pipe around the struts to open the pipe and produce a symmetrical flow profile for the flow-measuring apparatus as the plates are moved towards the center line of the pipe; and
measuring and controlling water flow along the pipe, including utilizing the fluid control barrier and the flow-measuring apparatus.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the pipe forms part of an irrigation system and the method further comprises irrigating with water flowing along the pipe as controlled by the fluid control barrier.
10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the pair of plates are joined along diametric sides of each of the pair of plates by a hinge along their straight edges to allow for the opening and closing.
11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the pair of plates form a bi-foldable barrier.
