Abstract

A conducted electrical weapon (“CEW”) launches wire-tethered electrodes from one or more cartridges to provide a current through a human or animal target to impede locomotion of the target. The CEW may detect when the electrodes launched from the cartridges may provide the current through more than one target. The CEW may detect when electrodes launched from the cartridges may provide the current through the same target. The CEW may set the pulse rate of the current based on detecting the launch of electrodes from one or more cartridges, detecting that electrodes may provide the current through two or more targets, and/or detecting that two or more pairs of electrodes may deliver the current through the same target.

Claims (40)

1. A conducted electrical weapon (“CEW”) for providing a current through target tissue of a target to impede locomotion of the target, the CEW comprising:

a processing circuit;

a signal generator for providing the current at a pulse rate;

at least two electrodes to provide the current through the target tissue to impede locomotion of the target, wherein after launch of the at least two electrodes toward the target, the processing circuit is configured to:

set the pulse rate to one of a first pulse rate and a second pulse rate;

cooperate with the signal generator to detect a number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes available to deliver the current through the target tissue; and

adjust the pulse rate in accordance with the number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes available to deliver the current through the target tissue.

2. The CEW of claim 1 , wherein the second pulse rate is less than the first pulse rate.

3. The CEW of claim 1 wherein cooperating with the signal generator to detect the number of electrode pairs includes:

applying a first voltage across a pair of the at least two electrodes after launch of the pair of the at least two electrodes to test whether a circuit exists; and

if the circuit does not exist at the first voltage, applying a second voltage higher than the first voltage without forming an arc across the front of the CEW.

4. The CEW of claim 1 wherein adjusting the pulse rate includes:

setting the pulse rate to the first pulse rate for a first detected number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes available to deliver the current through the target tissue; and

setting the pulse rate to the second pulse rate for a second detected number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes available to deliver the current through the target tissue, the second detected number different from the first detected number.

5. The CEW of claim 4 , wherein the second detected number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes available to deliver the current through the target tissue is less than the first detected number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes available to deliver the current through the target tissue.

6. The CEW of claim 5 , wherein the second pulse rate is less than the first pulse rate.

7. The CEW of claim 1 , wherein the at least two electrodes include at least three electrodes and the processing circuit is configured to increase the pulse rate after launch of the at least three electrodes.

8. The CEW of claim 1 , wherein the at least two electrodes include at least three electrodes and adjusting the pulse rate includes reducing the pulse rate when the number of electrode pairs includes two or more pairs of the at least three electrodes.

9. The CEW of claim 1 , wherein the at least two electrodes include at least three electrodes and detecting the number of electrode pairs includes testing each pair of the launched at least three electrodes to determine whether each pair can electrically couple to the target tissue to deliver the current through the target tissue.

10. The CEW of claim 9 , wherein detecting the number of electrode pairs includes retesting each pair of the launched at least three electrodes to determine whether each pair can electrically couple to the target tissue to deliver the current through the target tissue.

11. The CEW of claim 1 , wherein cooperating with the signal generator to detect the number of electrode pairs includes detecting whether electrodes of a pair of electrodes that electrically couple to the target tissue were launched from a same cartridge or different cartridges.

12. A method performed by a conducted electrical weapon (“CEW”), the CEW for providing a current through a target, the current for impeding locomotion of the target, the method comprising:

launching at least two electrodes toward the target;

detecting a number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes that form a circuit through target tissue of the target, the circuit for providing the current through the target to impede locomotion of the target;

setting a pulse rate of the current to a first pulse rate or a second pulse rate;

adjusting the pulse rate in accordance with the number of electrode pairs of the launched electrodes that form the circuit for providing the current through the target tissue.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the second pulse rate is less than the first pulse rate.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein adjusting the pulse rate includes setting the pulse rate to the first pulse rate for a first detected number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes available to deliver the current through the target tissue; and

setting the pulse rate to the second pulse rate for a second detected number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes available to deliver the current through the target tissue, the second detected number different from the first detected number.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the second detected number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes available to deliver the current through the target tissue is less than the first detected number of electrode pairs of the at least two electrodes available to deliver the current through the target tissue.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the at least two electrodes include at least three electrodes and adjusting the pulse rate comprises increasing the pulse rate after launch of the at least three electrodes.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the at least two electrodes include at least three electrodes and adjusting the pulse rate includes reducing the pulse rate when the number of electrode pairs includes two or more pairs of the at least three electrodes.

18. A conducted electrical weapon (“CEW”) for providing a current through target tissue of a target to impede locomotion of the target, the CEW comprising:

a processing circuit;

a signal generator for providing the current at a pulse rate;

at least two electrodes to provide the current through the target tissue to impede locomotion of the target, wherein after launch of the at least two electrodes toward the target, the processing circuit is configured to:

set the pulse rate of the current provided by the signal generator to a first pulse rate when a first number of electrode pairs of at least two electrodes is available to electrically couple to the target to provide the current; and
