Abstract

A turbine engine system includes a gutter and a gear train with an axial centerline. The gutter is disposed radially outside of the axial centerline. The gutter at least partially circumscribes the gear train, and includes an inner surface and a channel. The channel receives fluid directed out of the gear train. The channel extends radially into the gutter from the inner surface to a channel end, and circumferentially to a channel outlet. At least a portion of the channel has a cross-sectional channel geometry that tapers axially as the channel extends radially towards the channel end.

Claims (64)

1. A system for a gas turbine engine, comprising:

a gear train with an axial centerline; and

a gutter at least partially circumscribing the gear train;

the gutter including an inner surface and a channel;

the channel configured to receive fluid directed out of the gear train; and

the channel extending radially into the gutter from the inner surface, and the channel extending circumferentially within the gutter to a channel outlet;

wherein the channel outlet has a triangular cross-sectional geometry.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the triangular cross-sectional geometry is an obtuse triangular cross-sectional geometry.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein

the channel outlet is radially outboard of and circumferentially aligned with a first portion of the channel; and

the first portion of the channel has a polygonal cross-sectional geometry.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the polygonal cross-sectional geometry is a rectangular cross-sectional geometry.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein

a second portion of the channel has a cross-sectional geometry comprising a first region and a second region radially outboard of the first region; and

the second region has a triangular shape.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the first region has a rectangular shape.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a plurality of turbine engine rotors arranged along the axial centerline;

the turbine engine rotors including a first rotor and a second rotor;

each of the turbine engine rotors including a plurality of rotor blades arranged around and connected to a rotor disk; and

the first rotor connected to and driven by the second rotor through the gear train.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first rotor is configured as a fan rotor and the second rotor is configured as a turbine rotor.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the gear train comprises a planetary gear train or a star gear train.

10. A system for a gas turbine engine, comprising:

a gear train with an axial centerline; and

a gutter at least partially circumscribing the gear train;

the gutter including an inner surface and a channel;

the channel configured to receive fluid directed out of the gear train; and

the channel extending radially into the gutter from the inner surface, and the channel extending circumferentially within the gutter to a channel outlet;

wherein the channel outlet is radially outboard of and circumferentially aligned with a first portion of the channel;

wherein the channel outlet has a rectangular cross-sectional geometry with a first axial width;

wherein the first portion of the channel has a rectangular cross-sectional geometry with a second axial width that is greater than the first axial width; and

wherein an axial center of the channel outlet is axially aligned with an axial center of the first portion of the channel.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein

the gutter further includes a conduit that extends through the gutter and is fluidly coupled with and downstream of the channel outlet; and

a wall of the gutter axially separates and partially forms a first portion of the conduit and the first portion of the channel.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first portion of the conduit has a rectangular cross-sectional geometry.

13. A system for a gas turbine engine, comprising:

a gear train with an axial centerline; and

a gutter at least partially circumscribing the gear train;

the gutter including an inner surface and a channel;

the channel configured to receive fluid directed out of the gear train; and

the channel extending radially into the gutter from the inner surface, and the channel extending circumferentially within the gutter to a channel outlet;

wherein the channel outlet has a channel outlet cross-sectional geometry comprising a first region and a second region radially outboard of the first region;

wherein the first region has an acute trapezoidal shape; and

wherein the second region has a rectangular shape.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the channel outlet cross-sectional geometry consists of the first region and the second region.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein

a portion of the channel upstream of the channel outlet has a channel cross-sectional geometry comprising a channel first region and a channel second region located radially outboard of the channel first region; and

the channel first region and the channel second region are configured with at least different shapes and/or different sizes.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the channel first region has a rectangular shape and the channel second region has an acute trapezoidal shape.

17. A system for a gas turbine engine, comprising:

a gear train with an axial centerline; and

a gutter at least partially circumscribing the gear train;

the gutter including an inner surface and a channel;

the channel configured to receive fluid directed out of the gear train; and

the channel extending radially into the gutter from the inner surface, and the channel extending circumferentially within the gutter to a channel outlet;

wherein the channel outlet is radially outboard of and circumferentially aligned with a first portion of the channel;
