Abstract

Disclosed are methods of treating symptoms of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS), both obstructive and irritative, that include identifying patients having benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and who also have LUTS, and administering a composition comprising FT to the so-identified patient. The methods are particularly effective in improving urinary peak flow (Qmax), and in improving nocturia.

Claims (18)

1. A method of treating Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS), comprising:

(a) identifying and selecting patients having irritative or obstructive LUTS who do not also have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH); and

(b) administering a composition comprising Fexapotide Triflutate (FT) to a patient identified and selected in (a) above.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises administration of a composition comprising FT and a carrier.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein FT is present in the composition in an amount of 2.5 mg/L.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is administered by a method selected from the group consisting of orally, subcutaneously, intradermally, intranasally, intravenously, intramuscularly, intrathecally, intranasally, intratumorally, topically, transrectally, transperitoneally, and transdermally.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the patients identified in (a) have irritative LUTS.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the irritative symptoms are selected from the group consisting of daytime urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the irritative symptom is nocturia.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the method provides a decrease in the percentage of patients with nocturia frequency change >0 from baseline to 12 months of from about 25% to about 50%, when compared to administration of a placebo control, wherein the nocturia frequency change is determined by subtracting the nocturia score at 12 months from the baseline nocturia score, the nocturia score determined by how many times over the past month the patient had to get up to urinate from the time the patient went to bed until the time the patient got up—the score ranging from none (score 0) to 5 or more times (score 5).

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the method provides a decrease in the percentage of patients with nocturia frequency change >0 from baseline to 12 months of from about 30% to about 40%, when compared to administration of a placebo control.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the patients identified in (a) have obstructive LUTS.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the obstructive symptoms are selected from the group consisting of straining, weak stream, intermittent stream, and incomplete emptying.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein FT is present in the composition in an amount of about 2.5 mg/l.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the method provides an improvement in reducing the percentage of patients who were not able to urinate an adequate volume of urine (>125 mL) after 12 months from administration of from about 20% to about 50%, when compared to a placebo control.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the method provides an improvement in reducing the percentage of patients who were not able to urinate an adequate volume of urine (>125 mL) after 12 months from administration of from about 25% to about 40%, when compared to a placebo control.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the method reduces the percentage of patients who showed deterioration/worsening in peak flow rate (“Qmax worsening”) 12 months after administration of from about 15% to about 40%, when compared to a placebo control.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the method reduces the percentage of patients who showed deterioration/worsening in peak flow rate (“Qmax worsening”) 12 months after administration of from about 18% to about 40%, when compared to administration of the same total amount of FT only once.
