Abstract

Some embodiments provide a soft tissue device, such as a transverse carpal ligament cutting device having one or more balloons that are deflated when the device is in an inactive position and are inflated when the device is in an active position. Other embodiments provide a soft tissue cutting method, such as a method of cutting a transverse carpal ligament that uses a soft tissue cutting device.

Claims (53)

1. A cutting device comprising:

(a) a shaft having a plurality of surfaces;

(b) a shaft opening that extends for a distance along one of the plurality of surfaces;

(c) a blade having a blade working end, wherein the blade working end includes a cutting edge; and

(d) a blade guideway within the shaft, wherein the blade working end slidably moves along the blade guideway, the blade guideway comprising a track having variable elevation along a length of the shaft such that the blade is configured to be elevated and lowered as the blade working end moves along the blade guideway, wherein the blade guideway includes a plateau located between a distal incline and a proximal incline.

2. The cutting device of claim 1 wherein the blade working end is configured as a hook, wherein the cutting edge of the hook includes an inner cutting edge that faces a proximal end of the transverse carpal ligament cutting device.

3. The cutting device of claim 1 wherein the blade working end includes a blade pin, wherein the blade pin slidably moves within the blade guideway.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the blade guideway further includes a distal guideway end and a proximal guideway end.

5. The cutting device of claim 4 wherein when the blade working end is positioned at the distal guideway end, the cutting edge is housed within the shaft.

6. The cutting device of claim 4 wherein when the blade working end is positioned at the proximal guideway end, the cutting edge is housed within the shaft.

7. The cutting device of claim 1 wherein when the blade working end is positioned along the plateau, the blade working end extends through the shaft opening such that the cutting edge is exposed.

8. The cutting device of claim 1 further including one or more balloons coupled to the shaft that expand radially outwardly from the shaft.

9. A soft tissue cutting device comprising:

(a) a shaft having a plurality of surfaces;

(b) a shaft opening that extends for a distance along one of the plurality of surfaces;

(c) a blade that extends through and withdraws from the shaft opening, the blade having a blade working end, wherein the blade working end includes a cutting edge;

(d) a blade guideway within the shaft, wherein the blade working end slidably moves along the blade guideway, the blade guideway comprising a track having variable elevation along a length of the shaft such that the blade is configured to be elevated and lowered as the blade working end moves along the blade guideway, wherein the blade guideway includes a plateau located between a distal incline and a proximal incline; and

(e) an inflation device, a first conduit, and a first balloon, wherein the first balloon is coupled to the first conduit and the first conduit is coupled to the inflation device and wherein the first balloon expands radially outwardly from the shaft.

10. The soft tissue cutting device of claim 9 wherein the first conduit includes a plurality of openings and the first balloon is positioned so the plurality of openings open to an inside of the first balloon.

11. The soft tissue cutting device of claim 10 wherein the inflation device is configured to hold an inflation material, wherein the inflation device is configured to move the inflation material forward out of the inflation device, into the first conduit, and through the openings, and wherein the inflation device is also configured to move the inflation material backward through the openings, into the first conduit, and into the inflation device.

12. The soft tissue cutting device of claim 11 wherein the inflation device includes a control assembly configured to control movement of the inflation material.

13. The soft tissue cutting device of claim 12 wherein the control assembly is housed within a handle.

14. The soft tissue cutting device of claim 12 further comprising an activator operably coupled to the control assembly, wherein activation of the activator is configured to cause the control assembly to move the inflation material.

15. The soft tissue cutting device of claim 14 wherein the activator is configured as a clamp.

16. The soft tissue cutting device of claim 9 wherein the first balloon includes a fixed portion and an expandable portion, wherein the fixed portion directly connects to the first conduit and the expandable portion does not contact the first conduit and expands freely of the first conduit.

17. The soft tissue cutting device of claim 16 wherein the first conduit includes a plurality of openings and the first balloon is positioned so the plurality of openings open to an inside of the expandable portion.

18. The soft tissue cutting device of claim 9 wherein the inflation device is housed within a handle at a proximal end of the soft tissue cutting device.

19. The soft tissue cutting device of claim 9 further including a second balloon and a second conduit, wherein the second conduit connects the second balloon to the inflation device.

20. A soft tissue cutting method comprising steps of:

providing a soft tissue cutting device comprising:

(a) a shaft;

(b) a shaft opening in the shaft;

(c) a blade that extends through and withdraws from the shaft opening, the blade having a blade working end, wherein the blade working end includes a cutting edge;

(e) one or more balloons coupled to the shaft that expand radially outward from the shaft;

advancing the soft tissue cutting device to a body region;

expanding the one or more balloons radially outward; and

extending the blade through the shaft opening to cut soft tissue in the body region.

21. The method of claim 20 further comprising adjusting a height of the blade guideway by changing an angle of the at least one incline relative to the plateau.

22. A cutting device comprising:

(a) a shaft having a plurality of surfaces;

(b) a shaft opening that extends for a distance along one of the plurality of surfaces;

(c) a blade having a blade working end, wherein the blade working end includes a cutting edge; and

(d) a blade guideway within the shaft, wherein the blade working end slidably moves along the blade guideway, the blade guideway comprising a track having variable elevation along a length of the shaft such that the blade is configured to be elevated and lowered as the blade working end moves along the blade guideway, wherein the blade guideway includes at least one incline and a height of the blade guideway is adjustable by changing an angle of the at least one incline.

23. A soft tissue cutting method comprising steps of:

providing a soft tissue cutting device comprising:

(a) a shaft;

(b) a shaft opening in the shaft;

(c) a blade that extends through and withdraws from the shaft opening, the blade having a blade working end, wherein the blade working end includes a cutting edge; and
