Abstract

A system for treatment of an aneurysm includes an intrasaccular device that can be delivered using a catheter. The device can include at least one expandable structure adapted to transition from a compressed configuration to an expanded configuration when released into the aneurysm. The expandable structure can have a specific shape or porosity. Multiple expandable structures can also be used, in which case each of the expandable structures can have a unique shape or porosity profile. The morphology of the aneurysm and orientation of any connecting arteries can determine the type, size, shape, number, and porosity profile of the expandable structure used in treating the aneurysm.

Claims (29)

1. A method for treatment of an aneurysm, comprising:

intravascularly delivering a framing device through a catheter in a compressed configuration to a cavity of the aneurysm, wherein the framing device comprises a proximal end portion, a distal end portion, and a sidewall extending between the proximal end portion and the distal end portion, the sidewall comprising multiple braided layers extending along an entire length of the sidewall in the compressed configuration;

releasing the framing device from the delivery catheter to expand the framing device to an expanded configuration in the aneurysm cavity such that at least a portion of the framing device contacts an inner surface of the aneurysm wall, wherein the sidewall of the framing device comprises multiple braided layers extending along the entire length of the sidewall in the expanded configuration, and wherein the framing device encloses an interior volume; and

positioning a liquid embolic between the framing device and the aneurysm wall.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising positioning an aperture of the framing device at the neck of the aneurysm.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the catheter is a first catheter and the method further comprises inserting a second catheter into an aperture of the framing device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the framing device assumes a substantially spherical shape when released from the catheter.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the framing device comprises a hollow, braided structure.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the framing device is a braided device comprising a dual layer shell.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the framing device has a first, closed end and a second end opposite the first end, the second end having an opening, and wherein the method comprises aligning the opening with a neck of the aneurysm.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the framing device has a porosity such that the liquid embolic does not penetrate the framing device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the framing device includes stainless steel, nitinol, and/or cobalt chromium.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein a distalmost end of the framing device in the compressed configuration is also a distalmost end of the framing device in the expanded configuration.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall is inverted inwardly into the interior volume defined by the sidewall at the distal end portion of the framing device.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein, after releasing the framing device from the delivery catheter to expand the framing device to an expanded configuration in the aneurysm cavity, wherein the framing device is positioned entirely within the aneurysm cavity.

13. A method for treatment of an aneurysm, comprising:

advancing an expandable framing device through a catheter to a cavity of the aneurysm, the expandable framing device comprising a proximal end portion, a distal end portion, and a dual-layered shell extending from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion along an entire length of the framing device while advancing the expandable framing device through the catheter;

positioning the expandable framing device in the cavity of an aneurysm, the framing device having an expanded state in which the framing device encloses a cavity and includes an aperture in communication with the cavity;

expanding the framing device in the aneurysm cavity such that (a) at least a portion of the framing device contacts an inner surface of the aneurysm wall, (b) the aperture is accessible through a neck of the aneurysm, and (c) the expandable framing device comprises a dual-layered shell extending along the entire length of the framing device once expanded in the aneurysm cavity;

advancing a liquid embolic through the aperture in the framing device; and positioning the liquid embolic between the framing device and the aneurysm wall.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the framing device includes stainless steel, nitinol, and/or cobalt chromium.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the framing device assumes a substantially spherical shape in an expanded state.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the framing device comprises a hollow, braided structure.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the framing device comprises multiple braided layers.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the framing device has a first, closed end and a second end opposite the first end, the second end having an opening, and wherein the method comprises aligning the opening with a neck of the aneurysm.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the framing device has a porosity such that the liquid embolic does not penetrate the framing device.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein a distalmost end of the framing device while advancing the framing device through the catheter is also a distalmost end of the framing device once the framing device is expanded in the aneurysm cavity.

21. The method of claim 13 , wherein the dual-layered shell is inverted inwardly into the cavity of the framing device at the distal end portion of the framing device.

22. The method of claim 13 , wherein, after releasing the framing device from the delivery catheter to expand the framing device to an expanded configuration in the aneurysm cavity, wherein the framing device is positioned entirely within the aneurysm cavity.
