Abstract

A camera housing includes an integrated expansion module for providing expanded functionality to a camera (e.g., a display screen, a microphone, a battery, etc.). Different embodiments of the housing include different expansion modules for adding a variety of features to the camera when the camera is placed in the housing. Thus, a user may modify features of a camera by swapping the housing. Furthermore, a user may add a feature to an existing camera without needing to purchase a new camera.

Claims (37)

1. A system, comprising:

a camera, comprising:

a camera body; and

a first communicative interface positioned near an edge of the camera body;

an expansion module detachably coupled to the camera body, comprising:

a second communicative interface positioned near an edge of the expansion module that couples to the first communicative interface of the camera; and

electronics configured to perform a camera function additional to camera functions enabled by electronics within the camera body; and

a securing mechanism for physically securing the expansion module to the camera.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first communicative interface comprises an opening into a side of the camera body.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the second communicative interface comprises a protrusion structured for insertion into the opening of the first communicative interface.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the additional camera function comprises enhanced audio capture.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the additional camera function comprises a display for interfacing with the camera to display images or video captured by the camera.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the additional camera function comprises an expansion input-output module.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the additional camera function comprises at least one of infrared, thermal, or enhanced vision capability.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the additional camera function comprises an expansion power supply.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the expansion module includes a housing structured to at least partially enclose the camera, and wherein the expansion power supply extends along and supports a back surface of the camera body when the camera is secured in the housing.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the securing mechanism includes a hinge structure and a fastening structure configured such that a portion of the housing moves between open and closed positions to allow insertion and removal of the camera.

11. An expansion module for a camera, comprising:

a housing having sides forming a cavity to receive and secure a body of the camera;

an expansion interface extending into the cavity that detachably couples to a camera interface in the body of the camera to facilitate data communications between the expansion module and the camera when coupled;

electronics configured to perform a camera function additional to camera functions enabled by the camera; and

a securing mechanism configured to removably secure the housing to the body of the camera.

12. The expansion module of claim 11 , wherein the securing mechanism includes a hinge structure and a fastening structure configured such that a portion of the housing rotates between open and closed positions to allow insertion and removal of the camera.

13. The expansion module of claim 11 , wherein the additional camera function comprises enhanced audio capture.

14. The expansion module of claim 13 , wherein the additional camera function is a first camera function, wherein the electronics of the expansion module are configured to perform a second camera function additional to the camera functions enabled by the camera, and wherein the second camera function comprises additional storage space for storing captured images and/or video.

15. The expansion module of claim 11 , wherein the additional camera function comprises at least one of an expansion input-output module and an expansion power supply.

16. The expansion module of claim 11 , wherein the additional camera function comprises at least one of infrared, thermal, or enhanced vision capability.

17. A housing for a camera, comprising:

a first housing portion having sides forming a cavity to receive and secure a body of the camera;

a power source integrated into the first housing portion;

a second housing portion comprising a hinge mechanism disposed proximate a first edge of the second housing portion and a securing mechanism disposed proximate a second edge of the second housing portion,

wherein the hinge mechanism allows the second housing portion to rotate between an open position and a closed position in respect to the first housing portion, and

wherein the securing mechanism enables the second housing portion to be securely latched to the first housing portion in the closed position; and

a housing interface protruding into the cavity of the first housing portion,

wherein the housing interface detachably couples to a camera interface in the body of the camera to provide power from the power source to the camera when coupled.

18. The housing of claim 17 , wherein one of the sides of the first housing portion is structured to extend along and support a back surface of the body of the camera when the camera is secured in the housing.

19. The housing of claim 18 , wherein the power source is disposed within the side of the first housing portion that supports the back surface of the body of the camera.
