Abstract

A system is provided for use in managing waste services performed by a service vehicle. The system may include a sensor configured to capture during completion of a waste service activity an image of waste set out for retrieval by the service vehicle, a portal, and a processor in communication with the sensor and the portal. The processor may be configured to execute instructions stored in memory to receive from a consumer via the portal at least one of a picture and a description of a desired item, to recognize an object in the image captured by the sensor, to make a determination regarding matching of the object with the desired item, and to selectively cause a notification to be displayed on the portal based on the determination.

Claims (67)

1. A system for managing waste services performed by a service vehicle, comprising:

an optical sensor configured to capture and generate an image of waste set out for retrieval by a first consumer when the service vehicle approaches a waste service location;

a locating device configured to generate a vehicle location signal associated with a real-time location of the service vehicle at the same time as the optical sensor generates the image of waste set out for retrieval when the service vehicle approaches the waste service location;

a processor in communication with the optical sensor and the locating device, the processor configured to execute instructions stored in memory to:

receive from a second consumer using a consumer device at least one of a picture and a description of a desired item, wherein the description describes a condition of the desired item;

receive the vehicle location signal and a consumer location signal indicating a location of the second consumer;

receive an image from the optical sensor of waste including a bulk item placed curbside for disposal;

recognize the bulk item within the image of waste captured by the optical sensor;

compare the picture of the desired item and the description with the image of waste captured by the optical sensor;

make a determination regarding matching of the recognized bulk item with the desired item; and

make a determination regarding whether the second consumer is within a threshold distance based on the vehicle location signal and the consumer location signal; and

when the location of the second consumer is within the threshold distance, automatically determine to load the bulk item into the service vehicle via a vehicle hatch or leave the bulk item at its current location based on an acceptance or rejection message.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to receive from the second consumer via a portal an acceptance or a rejection of the desired item in the image of waste captured by the optical sensor.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute the instructions to:

determine based on the consumer location signal when the consumer device is located on a route of the service vehicle not yet serviced; and

determine whether to pick up and deliver the desired item to the location of the second consumer when the consumer device is located on the route.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute the instructions to determine to leave the desired item at its current location when the consumer device is not located on the route.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the system further includes a hauler portal; and

the processor is further configured to execute the instructions to:

receive from the consumer device a request for assistance in arranging delivery of the desired item to a location associated with the consumer device;

receive, from the consumer device, conditions associated with the delivery; and

transmit the conditions associated with the delivery to the hauler portal.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute the instructions to:

receive via the hauler portal an acceptance from a hauler to provide the delivery.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein the conditions include a timing of the delivery.

8. A computer-implemented method for managing waste services performed by a service vehicle, comprising:

capturing and generating by an optical sensor an image of waste set out for retrieval by a first consumer when the service vehicle approaches a waste service location;

generating a vehicle location signal associated with the location of the service vehicle at the same time as the optical sensor generates the image of waste set out for retrieval when the service vehicle approaches the waste service location;

receiving from a second consumer using a consumer device at least one of a picture and a description of a desired item, wherein the description describes a condition of the desired item;

receiving a consumer location signal indicating a location of the second consumer;

receiving an image of waste including a bulk item placed curbside for disposal;

recognizing the bulk item within the image of waste;

comparing the picture of the desired item and the description with the image of waste;

making a determination regarding matching of the recognized bulk item with the desired item; and

making a determination regarding whether the second consumer is within a threshold distance based on the vehicle location signal and the consumer location signal; and

when the location of the second consumer is within the threshold distance, automatically determine to load the bulk item into the service vehicle via a vehicle hatch or leave the bulk item at its current location based on an acceptance message or rejection message.

The method of claim 8 , further including receiving from the consumer device the acceptance message or the rejection message of the desired item in the image of waste, and disposing of the desired item or leaving the desired item at its current location based on the acceptance message or the rejection message.

10. The method of claim 8 , further including:

determining based on the consumer location signal when the consumer device is located on a route of the service vehicle not yet serviced; and

determine to pick up and deliver the desired item to the second consumer when the consumer device is located on the route.

11. The method of claim 10 , further including determine to leave the desired item at its current location for the second consumer when the consumer device is not located on the route.

12. The method of claim 8 , further including:

receiving from the consumer device a request for assistance in arranging delivery of the desired item;

receiving from the consumer device conditions associated with the delivery; and

displaying the conditions associated with the delivery to a hauler.

13. The method of claim 12 , further including

receiving an acceptance from the hauler to provide the delivery.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the conditions include a timing of the delivery.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium encoded with instructions, which when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method for managing waste services by a service vehicle, comprising:

capturing and generating by an optical sensor, during completion of a waste service activity by the service vehicle approaching a waste service location, an image of waste set out for retrieval;

detecting a location of the service vehicle at the same time as the optical sensor generates the image of waste set out for retrieval when the service vehicle approaches the waste service location;

receiving from a consumer device at least one of a picture and a description of a desired item, wherein the description describes condition of the desired item;

receiving a consumer location signal indicating a location of a second consumer;

recognizing an object in the picture;

making a determination regarding matching of the object with the desired item;

making a determination regarding whether the second consumer is within a threshold distance based on the vehicle location signal and the consumer location signal; and

when the location of the second consumer is within the threshold distance, automatically determine to load the object into the service vehicle via a vehicle hatch or leave the object at its current location based on an acceptance message or rejection message.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the method further includes:

determining based on the consumer location signal if the consumer device is located on a route of the service vehicle not yet serviced;

determining to pick up and deliver the object to a consumer location when the consumer location is located on the route; and

determining to leave the object at its current location when the consumer location is not located on the route.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the method further includes:

receiving from the consumer device a request for assistance in arranging delivery of the object;

receiving from the consumer device conditions associated with the delivery;

displaying the conditions associated with the delivery to a hauler; and

receiving an acceptance from the hauler to provide the delivery.
