Composite proton-conducting membrane
A composite proton-conducting membrane comprising an inorganic polymer whose pores are filled with an organic polymer, wherein both the inorganic polymer and the organic polymer are proton conductors and wherein said composite proton-conducting membrane can operate in the absence of solvents, such as water.
1. A composite proton-conducting membrane comprising 70 to 90 wt. % of an inorganic polymer whose pores are filled with 30 to 10 wt. % of an organic polymer;
wherein the inorganic polymer is a dry proton conductor;
wherein the organic polymer is a dry proton conductor;
wherein both the inorganic polymer and the organic polymer individually operate from room temperature to about 220° C. with no water, and
wherein said inorganic polymer and said organic polymer each conducts proton with no added solvent.
2. The composite proton-conducting membrane of claim 1 , wherein said added solvent is water.
3. The composite proton-conducting membrane of claim 1 , where said inorganic polymer comprises ceramic forms of pyrophosphate anion.
4. The composite proton-conducting membrane of claim 1 , where said organic polymer comprises polyphenylene with one or more amine phosphate moieties.
5. The composite proton-conducting membrane of claim 1 , wherein said composite proton-conducting membrane does not lose phosphate when exposed to water.
6. The composite proton-conducting membrane of claim 1 , wherein the organic polymer is a quaternary ammonium-QA-biphosphate ion-pair-coordinated polyphenylene.
7. The composite proton-conducting membrane of claim 1 , wherein the inorganic polymer is a ceramic, inorganic polymer In 0.1 Sn 0.9 P 2 O 7 .
8. The composite proton-conducting membrane of claim 1 , wherein said membrane comprises a homogeneous blend of the inorganic polymer and the organic polymer.
9. The composite proton-conducting membrane of claim 8 , wherein said inorganic polymer comprises In 0.1 Sn 0.9 P 2 O 7 ; and said organic polymer comprises quaternary ammonium-QA-biphosphate ion-pair-coordinated polyphenylene.
10. The composite proton-conducting membrane according to claim 9 , wherein the inorganic polymer is In 0.1 Sn 0.9 P 2 O 7 .
11. The composite proton-conducting membrane according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic polymer comprises a form of tin (IV) pyrophosphate(-IV) substituted with trivalent ions.
12. The composite proton-conducting membrane according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic polymer comprises a form of tin (IV) pyrophosphate(-IV) substituted with indium (III) or aluminum (III) trivalent ions.
