Abstract

A Robotic control system has a wand, which emits multiple narrow beams of light, which fall on a light sensor array, or with a camera, a surface, defining the wand's changing position and attitude which a computer uses to direct relative motion of robotic tools or remote processes, such as those that are controlled by a mouse, but in three dimensions and motion compensation means and means for reducing latency.

Claims (37)

1. A robotic surgery system comprising:

a display configured to display information to a user; and

a processor configured to:

receive an image of at least a portion of a surgical site;

cause the image to be displayed on the display; and

in response to a determination that a first instrument has been made available for use at the surgical site, cause a first icon representing the first instrument to be displayed on the display, the first icon indicating to the user that the first instrument is available for use at the surgical site.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

cause the first icon representing the first instrument to be displayed in a first region of the display; and

in response to a determination that a second instrument has been selected and made available for use at the surgical site, cause a second icon representing the second instrument and indicating to the user that the second instrument is available for use at the surgical site to be displayed in a second region of the display, the second region being different from the first region.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first region and the second region are positioned within a region occupied by the image on the display.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the processor is further configured to cause resizing, repositioning, or turning off the second icon.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to cause the first icon representing the first instrument to be displayed on the display by causing a portion of the first icon to be bolded.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to cause resizing, repositioning, or turning off the first icon.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to receive the image from a camera positioned at the surgical site.

8. A robotic surgery system comprising:

a viewer; and

a processor configured to:

cause an image of at least a portion of a surgical site to be displayed on the viewer;

cause the viewer to display a graphical overlay; and

in response to a determination that a first instrument has been made available for use at the surgical site, cause the graphical overlay to include a first graphical representation corresponding to the first instrument.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to, in response to a determination that a second instrument has been made available for use at the surgical site, cause the graphical overlay to include a second graphical representation corresponding to the second instrument.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first graphical representation is displayed in a first region of the viewer and the second graphical representation is displayed in a second region of the viewer, the second region being different from the first region.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first region and the second region are positioned within a region occupied by the image on the viewer.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first graphical representation indicates that the first instrument is available for use at the surgical site and the second graphical representation indicates that the second instrument is available for use at the surgical site.

13. A robotic surgery system comprising:

a viewer; and

a processor configured to:

cause an image of at least a portion of a surgical site to be displayed on the viewer;

cause a graphical overlay to be displayed on the viewer; and

in response to a determination that a first instrument has been made available for use at the surgical site, cause a characteristic of the graphical overlay to change to represent the first instrument.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the processor is configured to cause the characteristic of the graphical overlay to change to represent the first instrument by causing a portion of the graphical overlay to be emphasized.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the portion of the graphical overlay comprises an icon graphically representing the first instrument.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the characteristic indicates that the first instrument is available for use at the surgical site.

17. The system of claim 13 , wherein the processor is further configured to, in response to a determination that a second instrument has been made available for use at the surgical site, cause the characteristic or a different characteristic of the graphical overlay to change to represent the second instrument.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the processor is configured to cause the characteristic or the different characteristic of the graphical overlay to change to represent the second instrument by causing a portion of the graphical overlay to be emphasized.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the portion of the graphical overlay comprises an icon graphically representing the second instrument.

20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the different characteristic indicates that the second instrument is available for use at the surgical site.
