Abstract

Various methods and systems are provided for a flexible, lightweight, low-cost radio frequency (RF) coil array of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. In one example, a RF coil array for a MRI system includes a plurality of RF coils, each RF coil comprising an integrated capacitor coil loop; a plurality of coupling electronics units each coupled to a respective coil loop; and a plurality of wires coupling each coupling electronics unit to an interface board configured to couple to a cable of the MRI system. The RF coil array is a high density (referring to the number of coil elements) anterior array (HDAA) or a high definition (referring to image resolution) anterior array.

Claims (23)

1. A radio frequency (RF) coil array for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, comprising:

a plurality of RF coils, each RF coil comprising an integrated capacitor coil loop, wherein each integrated capacitor coil loop comprises two parallel wire conductors and a dielectric material that encapsulates and separates the two parallel wire conductors;

a plurality of coupling electronics units each coupled to a respective coil loop; and

a plurality of coil-interfacing cables coupling each coupling electronics unit to an interfacing connector configured to couple to a cable of the MR imaging system.

2. The RF coil array of claim 1 , further comprising a sheet of material to which the plurality of RF coils, plurality of coupling electronics units, plurality of coil-interfacing cables are attached.

3. The RF coil array of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of RF coils, plurality of coupling electronics units, plurality of coil-interfacing cables, and attached sheet of material are encased in a polyurethane-based enclosure.

4. The RF coil array of claim 1 , wherein each coupling electronics unit comprises a pre-amplifier and an impedance matching network configured to generate a high blocking impedance.

5. The RF coil array of claim 4 , wherein each coupling electronics unit further includes a decoupling circuit.

6. The RF coil array of claim 4 , wherein the pre-amplifier comprises a low input impedance pre-amplifier optimized for high source impedance, and wherein the impedance matching network provides the high source impedance.

7. The RF coil array of claim 1 , wherein a capacitance of each coil loop is a function of a spacing between the respective two parallel wire conductors, a position and/or number of cuts on the two parallel wire conductors, and the dielectric material.

8. The RF coil array of claim 1 , wherein each coil loop is void of any capacitive and inductive lumped components along an entire length of the coil loop between terminating ends thereof.

9. The RF coil array of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of RF coils comprises a first RF coil, a second RF coil, a third RF coil, a fourth RF coil, and a fifth RF coil arranged into a first row with an additional five rows of RF coils for a total of six rows of five RF coils.

10. The RF coil array of claim 9 , wherein each coil-interfacing cable coupled to each coupling electronics unit of each RF coil forms a cable assembly that extends a long a central axis of the RF coil array to the interfacing connector.

11. The RF coil array of claim 10 , further comprising at least one balun positioned around the cable assembly.

12. The RF coil array of claim 1 , wherein the two parallel wire conductors comprise stranded wire.

13. A radio frequency (RF) coil array for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, comprising:

a plurality of RF coils arranged into a plurality of rows, each row of RF coils having an equal number of RF coils, each RF coil comprising an integrated capacitor coil loop, wherein each integrated capacitor coil loop comprises two parallel wire conductors and a dielectric material that encapsulates and separates the two parallel wire conductors;

a plurality of coupling electronics units each coupled to a respective coil loop;

a plurality of coil-interfacing cables coupling each coupling electronics unit to an interfacing connector configured to couple to a cable of the MR imaging system, the coil-interfacing cables from the plurality of RF coils forming a cable assembly; and

at least one balun positioned along the cable assembly.

14. The RF coil array of claim 13 , wherein each coupling electronics unit is orientated toward a central axis of the RF coil array, and wherein the cable assembly extends along the central axis.

15. The RF coil array of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of RF coils comprises six rows of RF coils, each row comprising five RF coils.

16. The RF coil array of claim 13 , wherein the two parallel wire conductors comprise stranded wire.
