Abstract

A method and apparatus for reducing energy consumption of devices is provided. In one embodiment, the method comprises at least one audio visual device connected via HDMI to a processor. The processor monitors via the processor any user initiated activity associated with said audio visual device and establishes an activity queue for the user initiated activity for the device. The processor also initiates a standby mode for said device when a period of inactivity has exceeded a threshold value.

Claims (31)

1 . A method of reducing energy consumption by controlling at least one audio visual device comprising:

monitoring via a processor any user activity associated with said audio visual device;

said processor establishing an activity profile for user activity for said device;

monitoring said audio visual device and changing state of said audio visual device to a standby mode when a period of inactivity has exceeded a first value.

2 . A device for controlling energy consumption of at least one device, comprising:

a processor connected to at least one audio visual device and configured to perform:

monitoring any user activity associated with any of said audio visual devices;

establishing an activity profile for each user initiated activity for any of said devices;

monitoring inactivity periods of each device and changing state of any inactive device to a standby mode when said period of inactivity exceeds a first value.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said state is changed to a standby mode after a delay period once said first inactivity value has been exceeded.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein a plurality of audio visual devices are connected via said HDMI to said processor, further comprising detecting via said processor any user activity associated with any of said plurality of audio visual devices.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein said processor monitors each of said devices for last user activity in order to determine if any of said devices has exceeded said first value.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein said processor changes the state of said device to a standby mode when first value has been exceeded.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein said mode has been changed to a standby mode after a delay once said first inactivity value has been exceeded.

8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein said first inactivity value is determined independently for each device such said first value is at least different for two devices amongst said devices.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said first value is determined by using a counter and said counter is reset every time an activity is detected for each device.

10 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

generating an activity profile for any and each audio visual device monitored by said processor.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein said activity profiles are stored and at least periodically update any new activity.

12 . The method of claim 10 further determining user preferences according to each activity profile for each device.

13 . The method of claim 12 , further adjusting at least one user default option in said activity profile based on past user preferences.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the processor is connected to the at least one audio visual device via a HDMI connection.

15 . A system for controlling energy consumption of a device, comprising:

a plurality of audio visual devices; and

a device according to claim 2 connected to said devices.

16 . The device of claim 2 , wherein said state is changed to a standby mode after a delay period once said first inactivity value has been exceeded.

17 . The device of claim 2 , wherein a plurality of audio visual devices are connected via said HDMI to said processor, further comprising detecting via said processor any user activity associated with any of said plurality of audio visual devices.

18 . The device of claim 2 , wherein said first value is determined by using a counter and said counter is reset every time an activity is detected for each device.

19 . The device of claim 2 further comprising:

generating an activity profile for any and each audio visual device monitored by said processor.

20 . The device of claim 16 , wherein the processor is connected to the at least one audio visual device via a HDMI connection.
