Claims (21)

1. A packaged product comprising:

a first compartment;

a second compartment separated from the first compartment;

a first article in the first compartment;

a second article in the second compartment;

a film having a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion forms at least a portion of the first compartment and wherein the second portion forms at least a portion of the second compartment; and

a barrier coating applied in strips or islands;

wherein the first portion of the film comprises the barrier coating and the second portion of the film does not comprise the barrier coating or comprises less of the barrier coating than the first portion of the film, wherein the first portion of the film with the barrier coating has a permeation rate of a migratory species less than the second portion of the film without the barrier coating or with less of the barrier coating.

2. A packaged product according to claim 1 , wherein the barrier coating is transparent.

3. A packaged product according to claim 1 , wherein the film is transparent.

4. A packaged product according to claim 1 , wherein the film is opaque.

5. A packaged product according to claim 1 , wherein the barrier coating reduces permeation of one or more of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, moisture, and aroma molecules.

6. A packaged product according to claim 1 , further comprising a container having a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion of the container defines at least a part of the first compartment and wherein the second portion of the container defines at least a portion of the second compartment, wherein the film is sealed to the container such that the first compartment is formed between the first portion of the film and the first portion of the container and wherein the second compartment is formed between the second portion of the film and the second portion of the container.

7. A packaged product according to claim 6 , wherein the film is heat sealed, ultrasonically sealed or adhesively sealed to the container.

8. A packaged product according to claim 6 , wherein the film is peelable from the container.

9. A packaged product according to claim 6 , wherein the container comprises a tray.

10. A packaged product according to claim 1 , wherein the film is sealed to itself to form the package.

11. A packaged product according to claim 10 , wherein the package is resealable.

12. A packaged product according to claim 1 , wherein an external surface of the film comprises an oriented layer.

13. A packaged product according to claim 1 , wherein the barrier coating comprises one or more of a polyacrylate, a polyalcohol, a polyvinylidene chloride, and an organic-inorganic hybrid.

14. A packaged product according to claim 1 , wherein one or both of the first article and the second article are food articles.
