Abstract

Carriers for embodying radioactive seeds, as well as a device for loading and customizing brachytherapy carriers based on the principles of optimizing a more precise and predictable dosimetry, and adaptable to the geometric challenges of a tumor bed in a real-time setting. The present disclosure relates to a specialized loading device designed to enable a medical team to create a radionuclide carrier for each patient and tumor reliably, reproducibly and efficiently.

Claims (23)

1. A method comprising:

providing a loading device having a support surface sized to receive a biocompatible material and at least one side wall including a guide channel sized and configured to direct a guide tool;

positioning the biocompatible material on the support surface, wherein the biocompatible material comprises a sheet having a substantially uniform side thickness of at least one millimeter;

inserting the guide tool through the guide channel and into the side of the biocompatible material; and

moving a radionuclide source into the biocompatible material to embed the radionuclide source into the biocompatible material.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biocompatible material comprises collagen.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the substantially uniform side thickness is about four millimeters.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one side wall is a proximal wall of the loading device.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the loading device further comprises a lid configured to engage with a top surface of the side wall, the lid having at least one exit guide channel positioned to receive the guide tool after passing through the biocompatible material.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the at least one exit guide channel is on a distal end of the loading device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biocompatible material comprises one or more sections each configured to receive one or more radionuclide sources.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

inserting the guide tool through a second guide channel of the side wall and into the biocompatible material; and

moving a second radionuclide source into the biocompatible material to embed the second radionuclide source into the biocompatible material.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

separating the one or more sections of the biocompatible material into corresponding one or more separately implantable radionuclide carriers.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein a strand of radionuclide sources including the radionuclide source are attached to the guide tool.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the guide tool comprises a needle.

12. A treatment system comprising:

a biocompatible material having a side thickness of at least one millimeter;

a radionuclide source;

a guide tool; and

a loading device having a support surface sized to receive the biocompatible material, and at least one side wall including at least one guide channel sized and configured to direct the guide tool into the side of the biocompatible material when positioned on the support surface to move the radionuclide source into the biocompatible material so that the radionuclide source is entirely embedded within the biocompatible material.
