Abstract

A damper assembly for a vehicle suspension system includes a first damper and a second damper. The second damper includes a housing having a wall that at least partially surrounds at least a portion of the first damper, the volume between the wall and the first damper defining a chamber, and the wall defines an aperture. The second damper also includes a piston positioned within the chamber, a conduit defining a flow path that includes the aperture, and a flow control device disposed along the flow path. The second damper is configured to provide a damping force that varies based on the position of the piston within the chamber.

Claims (47)

1. A damper assembly for a vehicle suspension system, comprising:

a first damper; and

a second damper, comprising:

a housing including a wall that at least partially surrounds at least a portion of the first damper; the volume between the wall and the first damper defining a chamber, wherein the wall defines an aperture;

a piston positioned within the chamber;

a conduit defining a flow path that includes the aperture; and

a flow control device disposed along the flow path,

wherein the second damper is configured to provide a damping force that varies based on the position of the piston within the chamber.

2. The damper assembly of claim 1 , wherein the wall defines a set of apertures, the conduit defining the flow path between the set of apertures.

3. The damper assembly of claim 2 ; wherein the wall defines a second set of apertures.

4. The damper assembly of claim 3 , further comprising a second conduit forming a second flow path between the second set of apertures, wherein the piston is configured such that movement thereof along the housing activates and deactivates the first flow path and the second flow path.

5. The damper assembly of claim 4 , wherein the flow control device comprises a bidirectional flow control device.

6. The damper assembly of claim 5 ; further comprising a second flow control device disposed along the second flow path.

7. The damper assembly of claim 6 , wherein the first flow control device is configured to produce recoil damping forces when the second damper is in a retracted position and the second flow control device is configured to produce compression damping forces when the second damper is in an extended position.

8. The damper assembly of claim 2 , wherein the first damper comprises:

a housing including a wall that defines an inner volume;

a cap coupled to an end of the housing;

a piston slidably coupled to the wall and disposed within the inner volume;

a first tubular rod extending through the cap and coupled to the piston; and

a tubular member partially surrounding the first tubular rod and coupled to the piston.

9. The damper assembly of claim 8 , wherein the piston of the second damper is moveably coupled to the piston of the first damper.

10. The damper assembly of claim 9 , wherein the piston of the first damper and the piston of the second damper share a common central axis thereby forming a coaxial double damper.

11. The damper assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first damper and the second damper share a common central axis thereby forming a coaxial double damper.

12. The damper assembly of claim 1 , wherein the flow control device is a valve.

13. A damper assembly for a vehicle suspension system, comprising:

a housing including a wall that defines an inner volume, a first aperture, and a second aperture spaced from the first aperture along a length of the housing;

a piston disposed within the inner volume and configured to move between a first position and a second position;

a first conduit defining a first flow path that includes the first aperture;

a second conduit defining a second flow path that includes the second aperture; and

a first flow control device disposed along the first flow path and a second flow control device disposed along the second flow path, wherein the first flow control device and the second flow control device are bidirectional flow control devices, wherein at least one of the first flow control device and the second flow control device is a valve configured to provide a first level of damping as the piston extends from the first position to the second position and a second level of damping as the piston retracts from the second position to the first position.

14. The damper assembly of claim 13 , wherein the wall of the housing defines a first set of apertures including the first aperture, and wherein the wall of the housing defines a second set of apertures including the second aperture.

15. The damper assembly of claim 14 , wherein the first conduit extends between the first set of apertures, and wherein the second conduit extends between the second set of apertures.

16. A vehicle, comprising:

a wheel assembly;

an interface configured to engage a chassis of the vehicle; and

a damper assembly coupled to the wheel assembly and the interface, comprising:

a first damper; and

a second damper, comprising:

a housing including a wall that at least partially surrounds at least a portion of the first damper, the volume between the wall and the first damper defining a chamber, wherein the wall defines an aperture;

a piston positioned within the chamber;

a conduit defining a flow path that includes the aperture; and

a valve disposed along the flow path,

wherein the second damper is configured to provide a damping force that varies based on the position of the piston within the chamber.

17. The vehicle of claim 16 , wherein the first damper and the second damper share a common central axis thereby forming a coaxial double damper.

18. The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the second damper is configured to produce recoil damping forces when the piston is in a retracted position and is configured to produce compression damping forces when the piston is in an extended position.

19. The vehicle of claim 18 , wherein the piston of the second damper separates the chamber into a first volume and a second volume.

20. The vehicle of claim 19 , further comprising a second damper assembly, including a housing defining a second chamber and a piston separating the second chamber into a first volume and a second volume, wherein the first volume of the first damper assembly is coupled to the second volume of the second damper assembly in a cross-plumbed walking beam arrangement.
