Abstract

An optical coupler is provided for use with an optical imaging device, such as an endoscope. The coupler device includes a visualization section at one end of the coupler and an attachment section connected to and extending away from the visualization section. The attachment section is dimensioned to be mounted at the distal end of the optical imaging device. The coupler device includes one or more instrument channels extending through the proximal surface and exiting through the outer surface of the device. The coupler device may further include one or more supporting elements to facilitate passage of the device through a body lumen.

Claims (32)

1 . An optical coupler configured for removable coupling to an endoscope for visualizing a surface area in a patient, the endoscope comprising a light source, a lens and a working channel internal to the endoscope, the optical coupler comprising:

a visualization section at one end of the optical coupler, the visualization section including an outer surface extending from a first outer side boundary across a distal end portion to a second opposite outer side boundary of the visualization section, the distal end portion of the visualization section extending distal to, and across, the light source and the lens of the endoscope and comprising an interior portion between the first outer side boundary and the second outer side boundary and proximal to the distal end portion, the interior portion and the distal end portion of the visualization section comprising a semi-solid gel;

an attachment section connected to and extending away from the visualization section, the attachment section being dimensioned to be mounted at a distal end of the endoscope; and

a working channel extension having a proximal end configured for coupling to the working channel of the endoscope and extending through the visualization section and exiting through the outer surface of the optical coupler.

2 . The optical coupler of claim 1 wherein the attachment section comprises a longitudinally extending sleeve-like structure having:

an inner wall; and

an outer wall defined by the outer surface of the visualization section; and

wherein a proximal surface of the visualization section extends laterally across a width of the attachment section.

3 . The optical coupler system of claim 1 wherein the one or more channel(s) exits at an angle through the outer surface of the visualization section of the optical coupler.

4 . The optical coupler of claim 1 wherein the working channel extension is disposed relative to the optical coupler such that an instrument passing through the working channel extension remains visible in a field of view of the endoscope.

5 . The optical coupler of claim 1 wherein the working channel extension is movably coupled to the optical coupler.

6 . The optical coupler of claim 1 wherein the endoscope comprises a cannula for passing through an opening in the patient, the optical coupler further comprising an external sheath coupled to the optical coupler and being sized to substantially surround the cannula of the endoscope.

7 . The optical coupler of claim 6 wherein the external sheath is coupled to the optical coupler.

8 . The optical coupler of claim 6 wherein the external sheath is integral with the optical coupler.

9 . The optical coupler of claim 6 further comprising one or more hollow channel(s) extending through the external sheath.

10 . The optical coupler of claim 6 wherein the external sheath and the optical coupler are disposable.

11 . The optical coupler of claim 1 , wherein the one or more elastic materials has an index of refraction of about 1.3 to about 1.7.

12 . The optical coupler of claim 11 , wherein the index of refraction is about 1.4 to about 1.5.

13 . The optical coupler of claim 1 , wherein the endoscope light source has an index of refraction and wherein the one or more elastic materials of the interior portion of the visualization section has an index of refraction substantially equal to the index of refraction of the light source.

14 . A system comprising:

an endoscope comprising a light source, a lens and a working channel internal to the endoscope; and

an optical coupler configured for removable coupling to the endoscope and comprising:

a visualization section at one end of the optical coupler, the visualization section including an outer surface extending from a first outer side boundary across a distal end portion to a second opposite outer side boundary of the visualization section, the distal end portion of the visualization section extending distal to, and across, the light source and the lens of the endoscope and comprising an interior portion between the first outer side boundary and the second outer side boundary and proximal to the distal end portion, the interior portion and the distal end portion of the visualization section comprising a semi-solid gel;

an attachment section connected to and extending away from the visualization section, the attachment section being dimensioned to be mounted at a distal end of the endoscope; and

a working channel extension having a proximal end configured for coupling to the working channel of the endoscope and extending through the visualization section and exiting through the outer surface of the optical coupler.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the light source of the endoscope has an index of refraction and wherein the one or more elastic materials of the interior portion of the visualization section has an index of refraction substantially equal to the index of refraction of the light source.

16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more elastic materials has an index of refraction of about 1.3 to about 1.7.

17 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the index of refraction is about 1.4 to about 1.5.

18 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the endoscope comprises an elongate shaft for passing through an opening in a patient, the system further comprising an external sheath coupled to the optical coupler and being sized to substantially surround the elongate shaft of the endoscope.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the external sheath is coupled to the optical coupler.

20 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the external sheath is integral with the optical coupler.

21 . The system of claim 18 , further comprising one or more hollow channel(s) extending through the external sheath.
