Abstract

A system includes at least partially autonomous vehicles, at least partially separated interconnected roadways, and a management system. Each of the vehicles is configured to cooperate with another vehicle or an area controller. The management system is configured to receive requests to transport, which may have respective start points and respective destinations. Additionally, the management system is configured, responsive to receiving the request, to assign a vehicle to fulfill the request. The assigned vehicle is configured to transport a person from the respective start point, at least in part via the interconnected roadways, to the respective destination.

assigning, by the management system, a first at least partially autonomous vehicle from one or more at least partially autonomous vehicles to fulfill the request, the assigning comprising:

determining a load status of at least a portion of the transportation system;

in accordance with the load status satisfying a first condition, selecting the first at least partially autonomous vehicle according to a first vehicle selection scheme; and

in accordance with the load status satisfying a second condition, selecting the first at least partially autonomous vehicle according to a second vehicle selection scheme different from the first vehicle selection scheme;

informing, by the management system, the first at least partially autonomous vehicle of the assignment; and

providing, by the management system, an information set to the first at least partially autonomous vehicle related to the request, wherein

the first at least partially autonomous vehicle travels along a route including one or more at least partially separated interconnected roadways according to the information set to fulfill the request; and

during at least a portion of the travel along the route, the first at least partially autonomous vehicle communicates with a second at least partially autonomous vehicle to coordinate cooperative vehicle travel with the second at least partially autonomous vehicle.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, receiving, by the first at least partially autonomous vehicle, the information set from the management system, wherein the information set includes at least one of traffic flow, trip time, system capacity, and wait time.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, receiving, by the first at least partially autonomous vehicle, the information set from another vehicle, wherein the information set includes at least one of traffic flow, trip time, system capacity, and wait time.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, adjusting, by the first at least partially autonomous vehicle, at least one of vehicle velocity and vehicle headway.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the management system includes a plurality of area controllers each having an associated geographic area, the method further comprising:

sensing, by at least one of the plurality of the area controllers, a road condition; and

relaying, by the at least one of the plurality of area controllers, information corresponding to the road condition to a vehicle traveling in a respectively associated geographic area.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the management system includes a plurality of area controllers each having an associated geographic area, and wherein at least two respective associated geographic areas overlap.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, making an autonomous decision, by the first at least partially autonomous vehicle, based at least in part on information read from a sensor included on the first at least partially autonomous vehicle, wherein the sensor reads the information from a machine-readable marker embedded in one or more of the at least partially separated interconnected roadways.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first vehicle selection scheme is configured to minimize a wait time of a passenger at a start point associated with the request to transport.

9. A system comprising:

a plurality of at least partially autonomous vehicles;

a means for receiving a request to transport from a user;

a means for assigning a first vehicle of the plurality of at least partially autonomous vehicles to the request to transport, the assigning comprising:

determining a load status of at least a portion of the system;

in accordance with the load status satisfying a first condition, selecting the first vehicle according to a first vehicle selection scheme; and

in accordance with the load status satisfying a second condition, selecting the first vehicle according to a second vehicle selection scheme different from the first vehicle selection scheme;

a means for informing the first vehicle of the assignment; and

a means for providing an information set to the first vehicle related to the request, wherein

the first vehicle travels along a route including one or more at least partially separated interconnected roadways according to the information set to fulfill the request to transport; and

the first vehicle is configured to, during at least a portion of the travel along the route, communicate with a second vehicle of the plurality of at least partially autonomous vehicles to coordinate cooperative vehicle travel with the second vehicle.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a means for receiving the information set at the first vehicle, wherein the information set includes at least one of traffic flow, trip time, system capacity, and wait time.

11. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a means for adjusting at least one of an operating status of the plurality of at least partially autonomous vehicles, a quantity of vehicles on the one or more at least partially separated interconnected roadways, and a quantity of passengers at a boarding zone based at least in part on the received request to transport.

12. The system of claim 9 , further comprising:

a means for sensing a road condition; and

a means for relaying information corresponding to the road condition to a vehicle traveling in a geographic area associated with the means for sensing.

13. A system comprising:

a plurality of at least partially autonomous vehicles; and

a controller configured to:

receive a request to transport from a user;

assign a first vehicle of the plurality of at least partially autonomous vehicles to the request, the assigning comprising:

determining a load status of at least a portion of the system;

in accordance with the load status satisfying a first condition, selecting the first vehicle according to a first vehicle selection scheme; and

in accordance with the load status satisfying a second condition, selecting the first vehicle according to a second vehicle selection scheme different from the first vehicle selection scheme;

inform the first vehicle of the assignment; and

provide an information set to the first vehicle, wherein

the first vehicle is configured to travel, according to the information set, along a route that includes one or more at least partially separated interconnected roadways; and

the first vehicle is configured to:

during at least a portion of the travel along the route, communicate with a second vehicle of the plurality of at least partially autonomous vehicles to coordinate cooperative vehicle travel with the second vehicle; and

cooperatively travel with the second vehicle during the portion of the travel along the route.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first vehicle is further configured to, during the portion of the travel along the route, communicate with a third vehicle of the plurality of at least partially autonomous vehicles to coordinate cooperative vehicle travel with the second vehicle and the third vehicle.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein:

the portion of the travel along the route is a first portion of the travel along the route; and

the first vehicle is further configured to, during at least a second portion of the travel along the route, communicate with a third vehicle of the plurality of at least partially autonomous vehicles to coordinate cooperative vehicle travel with the third vehicle.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein:

during the cooperative travel with the second vehicle, the first and the second vehicles maintain a first distance from one another; and

when the first vehicle is not cooperatively travelling with the second vehicle, the first vehicle maintains a second distance from a third vehicle, the second distance greater than the first distance.

17. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first vehicle communicates the information set to the second vehicle.

18. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first vehicle is configured to initiate the communication with the second vehicle in response to the first vehicle determining that the second vehicle is within a sensor range of the first vehicle.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein:
