Abstract

One illustrative system disclosed herein includes a processor configured to receive a sensor signal from a neural interface configured to detect an electrical signal associated with a nervous system. The processor is also configured to determine an interaction in with a virtual object in a virtual environment based on the sensor signal. The processor is also configured to determine a haptic effect based at least in part on the interaction with the virtual object in the virtual environment. The processor is also configured to transmit a haptic signal associated with the haptic effect. The illustrative system further includes a haptic output device configured to receive the haptic signal and output the haptic effect.

Claims (43)

1. A system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory comprising program code that is executable by the processor to cause the processor to:

receive a sensor signal from a neural interface configured to detect an electrical signal associated with a nervous system, wherein the sensor signal includes a carrier signal that is encoded with digital data associated with a user;

determine a first haptic effect based on a waveform characteristic of the carrier signal, the waveform characteristic being distinct from the digital data;

determine a second haptic effect based on the digital data encoded in the carrier signal, the second haptic effect being different from the first haptic effect;

transmit a first haptic signal associated with the first haptic effect to a haptic output device, the first haptic signal configured to cause the haptic output device to output the first haptic effect; and

transmit a second haptic signal associated with the second haptic effect to the haptic output device, the second haptic signal configured to cause the haptic output device to output the second haptic effect.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the program code is further executable by the processor to cause the processor to determine a manipulation of a virtual object in a virtual environment based on the sensor signal, wherein the virtual environment comprises an augmented reality environment, a virtual reality environment, or a video game.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the manipulation of the virtual object comprises moving the virtual object in the virtual environment.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the first haptic effect or the second haptic effect is configured to simulate a texture of the virtual object.

5. The system of claim 2 , wherein the virtual object is an inanimate object in a video game.

6. The system of claim 2 , wherein the memory further comprises program code that is executable by the processor to cause the processor to:

determine a function based at least in part on the manipulation of the virtual object in the virtual environment; and

execute the function, wherein the function is configured to cause the user to perceive a sensation based at least in part on the manipulation of the virtual object in the virtual environment.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the neural interface comprises the haptic output device, and the haptic output device is configured to output the first haptic effect and the second haptic effect by stimulating the nervous system using electrical signals.

8. A method comprising:

receiving, by a processor, a sensor signal from a neural interface configured to detect an electrical signal associated with a nervous system, wherein the sensor signal includes a carrier signal that is encoded with digital data associated with a user;

determining, by the processor, a first haptic effect based on a waveform characteristic of the carrier signal, the waveform characteristic being distinct from the digital data;

determining, by the processor, a second haptic effect based on the digital data encoded in the carrier signal, the second haptic effect being different from the first haptic effect;

transmitting, by the processor, a first haptic signal associated with the first haptic effect to a haptic output device, the first haptic signal configured to cause the haptic output device to output the first haptic effect; and

transmitting, by the processor, a second haptic signal associated with the second haptic effect to the haptic output device, the second haptic signal configured to cause the haptic output device to output the second haptic effect.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising determining a manipulation of a virtual object in a virtual environment based on the sensor signal, wherein the virtual environment comprises an augmented reality environment, a virtual reality environment, or a video game.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the manipulation of the virtual object comprises moving the virtual object in the virtual environment.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first haptic effect or the second haptic effect is configured to simulate a texture of the virtual object.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the virtual object is an inanimate object in a video game.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the neural interface is a first neural interface, the method further comprising:

determining, by the processor, a function based at least in part on the manipulation of the virtual object in the virtual environment; and

executing, by the processor, the function, wherein the function is configured to cause the user to perceive a sensation based at least in part on the manipulation of the virtual object in the virtual environment.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the neural interface comprises the haptic output device, and the haptic output device is configured to output the first haptic effect and the second haptic effect by stimulating the nervous system using electrical signals.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program code that is executable by a processor to cause the processor to:

receive a sensor signal from a neural interface configured to detect an electrical signal associated with a nervous system, wherein the sensor signal includes a carrier signal that is encoded with digital data associated with a user;

determine a first haptic effect based on a waveform characteristic of the carrier signal, the waveform characteristic being distinct from the digital data;

determine a second haptic effect based on the digital data encoded in the carrier signal, the second haptic effect being different from the first haptic effect;

transmit a first haptic signal associated with the first haptic effect to a haptic output device, the first haptic signal configured to cause the haptic output device to output the first haptic effect; and

transmit a second haptic signal associated with the second haptic effect to the haptic output device, the second haptic signal configured to cause the haptic output device to output the second haptic effect.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , further comprising program code that is executable by the processor to cause the processor to determine a manipulation of a virtual object in a virtual environment based on the sensor signal, wherein the virtual environment comprises an augmented reality environment, a virtual reality environment, or a video game.
